Is Organic Better? Ask a Fruit Fly

Is Organic Better? Ask a Fruit Fly | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
A middle-school experiment using fruit flies and organic foods has won publication in a national scientific journal and spurred a debate about the relative benefits of organic eating.
Linda Alexander's insight:

I simply love this scientific research project that was created by a middle school student.  Fruit flies, my very own high school biology teacher's bug of choice, offer us countless advantages in terms of studying health given their short life spans.

Kansas's Self-Destruct Button: A Bill to Outlaw Sustainability

Kansas's Self-Destruct Button: A Bill to Outlaw Sustainability | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
Kansas representatives propose a bill to ban sustainable development in Kansas. Literally.
Linda Alexander's insight:

If there were ever a teachable moment--or "teachable Bill" this might be it.  Yes, Kansas (a place I spent five wonderful years in the mid-1990s) always seems to have more than its fair share of Bills that causes one to scratch their head and say--"Say it ain't so." The wording of the proposed Bill alone is sort of mind-boggling.

We need to protect the lands and cultural heritage of all peoples...especially when the objective is for international tourists to come and hunt animals.

Lost in the Supermarket: "Pandora's Lunchbox" ...Processed Food's True Story

Lost in the Supermarket: "Pandora's Lunchbox" ...Processed Food's True Story | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
A new book about processed food is so much fun you almost forget how depressing it all is.
Linda Alexander's insight:

This piece is about a brand new book, Pandora's Lunchbox, written by Melanie Warner.  This opinion piece shares that the book is "so much fun that you might forget how depressing it all is." Yes, it's true that 70 percent of the food we eat is highly processed.  There is an example that sort of says it all--Subway's Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki sandwich has an unbelievable 105 ingredients!  This is our food--these are our grocery stores--this is our life, health and that of our children. Yes, it's scary and may explain a lot of what ills us.

This is the reason we ask schools to try and begin to grow some of their own food. This is why we employ schools to teach children about nutrition and planting plants in clean soil. This is the reason educators FOR sustainability and others work so hard to overcome urban food wastelands, to lobby the government, the FDA, to permit us to see inside of food processing places, like slaughterhouses.  This is "The Jungle" described to us many years ago.  This is today's reality.

p.s. On the farm front, they're starting to fight back about the slew of Animal Cruelty video's surfacing.  I recently watched "Canned Dreams" and I can tell you it caused me canned nightmares.  Here is an op-ed on the attempt to stop the video-taping by animal rights groups (Ag-Gag Rules):  http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/07/us/taping-of-farm-cruelty-is-becoming-the-crime.html?WT.mc_id=NYT-E-I-NYT-E-AT-0410-L15&nl=el&_r=0

Linda Alexander's insight:

School cafetarias and gardeners take heed.  Very conclusive result regarding a trimethlamine N-oxide, proven to be a ten-fold predictor of heart disease.  School nurses and health teachers need to also share the dangers of high energy drinks that children often purchase.  Thank you Dr. Stanley Hazen, Cleveland Clinic, but also praise goes out to Dr. Esselstyn (Cleveland Clinic, China Study) who has been shouting from the rooftops regarding these same conclusions for well over a decade.

Aside from really wanting to showcase this Web site on this account, it is important to note that Dr. James Hansen announced his retirement.

"Dr. James Hansen, the top climate scientist in the US has just announced his retirement from NASA. He's been one of the best advocates a planet could ask for -- he even gave us our name when he wrote that 350 parts per million is the safe level of CO2 in the atmosphere."

The Change We Believe In, But Never Test

The Change We Believe In, But Never Test | Elevator Pitch: Education for Sustainability | Scoop.it
If we really want to change the world, we need to put our core beliefs about how the world changes to the test.
Linda Alexander's insight:

This article begins with an overview of a few philosophical underpinnings related to the unique lense each one of us subscribes to as far as climate change and/or the larger sustainability or, a far better descriptor, "flourishing" movement. Yes, we really want the world to flourish more than simply sustain, correct? However, the article is really about personally challenging and testing new and existing theories that arise and make their way into our overarching narrative; theories that are often accepted too fast or without enough testing and debate...
