The Coca-Cola Foundation is providing US$1 million to The Salvation Army to help provide immediate resources for food and shelter in hurricane-hit areas

Two of the locations that were devastated by Hurricane Irma and, less than two weeks later, Hurricane Maria were Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

 

Both are US territories and – even though they are located in the middle of the Caribbean – their inhabitants are officially US citizens.

Disaster Relief: All 47 Salvation Army units – from Pensacola to south Florida – are on standby and eager to assist residents in need. The Salvation Army is currently working on establishing five strategic staging areas which include Miami, Fort Myers, Palm Beach County, Vero Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

Along with the 32 canteens (mobile kitchens), The Salvation Army also has a fleet of equipment which includes two bunkhouses, two shower trailers, one generator and a Ford utility truck, which will be deployed as needed to the Hurricane Irma impacted areas.

 

The Salvation Army has more than 3,000 trained volunteers and staff in Florida, ready to offer a warm meal, bottled water, coffee or offer emotional and spiritual care.

The Salvation Army has been responding to the storm to help those in need and is accepting donations specifically for Harvey victims, according to its website. Like the American Red Cross, those who want to donate have the option to do so online, via telephone, or via text message.

This week marked more than three decades since Live Aid, a day-long charity concert for famine relief in Africa, drew in the attention of millions across the world.

Thousands – 90,000 in Philly, alone – attended the concerts that brought in stars like Eric Clapton in Philly, David Bowie in the U.K. and Phil Collins who made the transcontinental trek to perform in both cities. 

 

But, even more watched. About 1.5 billion people from 100 different countries tuned to their TV sets to watch the concert that raised $245 million for the good cause.

It was both empowering and inspiring. It has since become our mission to bring this type of support and love to each and every child that suffers from cleft lip and palate.

Israel: A report also showed that in 2015, there was the lowest return rate of Israelis since 2003: out of every 1,000 residents who left the country, only one returned.

 

Furthermore, exit rates for 2015 showed that two residents out of every 1,000 left the country for an extended period of time.

The study also revealed that between 1948 and 2015, approximately 720,000 Israeli citizens have left the country and never returned. This figure includes citizens who died overseas.

Christian Aid is working alongside other non-governmental agencies in Sierra Leone to coordinate its response to the flooding and mudslides that have killed nearly 400 people in the capital city, Freetown.

An estimated 3,000 people have lost their homes, while at least 600 individuals are still missing, according to authorities. Rescue efforts are continuing.

 

Christian Aid and other NGOs are focusing on those who are now homeless and have no access to food, clean water, medical assistance, sanitation supplies and shelter.

Pastoralists in Somalia struggle to survive under a severe drought

(ICRC) The nation of Somalia is currently facing a severe drought that has affected millions. This drought has led to the death of sheep and goats owned by pastoralists in the country, which in turn has caused an acute food insecurity.

Cee Harmon's insight:

Helping communities in need is a global priority for the ICRC, which so far this year has assisted 760,000 people. To help communities access whatever water is available, the ICRC is repairing boreholes and providing water troughs for animals.

 

The ICRC and the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) have assisted 760,000 people in 2017.

The coalition -- made up of CARE, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, Oxfam, Plan International, Save the Children and World Vision -- announced its Hunger Relief Fund. The groups said the coalition was the first of its kind.

More than 20 million people are at risk of starvation, the coalition said. The groups also said that without immediate help, 1.4 million severely malnourished children could die.

 

Carolyn Miles, the CEO of Save the Children, told Muir the malnutrition crisis was one of the worst she'd seen since World War II.

The gospel director died Monday after he was shot while trying to stop a fight between his brother and another man.  At age 25, Andre Wright was a gospel artist who performed beyond his years. But his life was tragically cut short this past week.

He served as musical director at several churches in the baton rouge area and served as a musician at many more. Due to how loved and well-known he was in the community, the church couldn't hold all those who wanted to attend Wright's funeral.

More than 3,500 men, women and children in Atlanta are in need of some kind of shelter, according to an analysis conducted by the non-profit Partners for Home.

 

About 1,500 of those people are in emergency shelters, while 1,300 are in transitional housing, before moving independently into a house or apartment. More than 680 are still on the streets.

China says the logistics center will support anti-piracy, U.N. peacekeeping and humanitarian relief missions in Africa and western Asia.

 

It says it will also facilitate military cooperation and joint exercises as the PLA navy and other services seek to expand their global reach in step with China's growing economic and political footprint.

In 2015, China detached three navy ships from the anti-piracy patrols to rescue Chinese citizens and other foreign nationals from fighting in Yemen. The same year, it took part in its first Mediterranean joint naval exercises with Russia.
