Harry & Rosemary Wong/Achieving Greatness: Alain L. Locke Elementary School, Part 2

You watch Monica Burns, a fourth year teacher, interact with her class as she conducts a lesson. The students hold up their hands if they want to speak and while others are talking, they pat themselves on the head as a signal they concur with what has been said. There is no yelling. No frantic waving of a gaggle of hands. No students blurting out. No put-downs of other student’s responses.

Games for Learning: Why Games Are Effective Educational Tools

By Adam Coccari

I am a 4th and 6th grade teacher that has been utilizing games in my lessons and tutoring sessions for a few years now. If I had suggested just five years ago that video games could play a major part in classroom education, the majority of teachers and school administrators would have laughed at me. Now, there seems to be somewhat of a sea change happening in this field. Educators are starting to believe what many researchers and advocates have long known: Video games can be excellent teaching tools and an effective way for students to learn.

Harry & Rosemary Wong/Teaching Greatness: Alain L. Locke Elementary School, Part 1

There is a man who lives on the top floor of an apartment building on 115th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem, New York City. Every morning, he says, he is awakened by the sound of the students four blocks away at Alain L. Locke Elementary School as they shout:

I was born from Greatness
Therefore that makes me Great.
Today I will spread Love
Not hate
Not lies
Not violence
Just Love.

Today I will do more,
I will learn more,
I will be more
Than anyone ever thought I could.
Today I will strive for GREATNESS and nothing else.

How to Pack a Lunch with a Punch!

Here’s a great article if you’re a parent (use these tips!) or if you’re a teacher (print these tips for your parents on what to pack for snack and lunch). It’s all about eatin’ healthy…because, in the classroom, children really are what they eat. Healthy food = healthy brains that are ready to learn.
