Today, radio is thought of as a broadcasting instrument for news, music, and information, but as early as the 1890's, when radio was originally introduced, the idea of broadcasting was not on anyones' mind. As the original days of radio began to come to a close, and war was on the brink in Europe, the status of radio stood only slightly different than where they had started. And out of the multiple major global powers, the U.S. communications market was the most impacted by the war in Europe.

Another great wireless technological development that came with the war was the improvement of the vacuum tube. Vacuum tubes were essential to so many aspects of radio, therefore, improvements were constant. The tubes were used in many aspects, such as; the areas of reception, transmission and voice .The tubes became a staple in nearly all electronics up until the modern digital age.

^..WWI had an immeasurable influence on the transformation of American radio from an alternative to wired communication to a broadcast medium and its uses during the war were not only essential, but endless.

Radio came to America in 1899 when Guglielmo Marconi sent Morse code through the airwave to report on yacht races off the New Jersey coast. For the next two decades,development of radio technology was left in the hands of a few men and focused almost exclusively on point to point communication. How didAmerican radio go from a narrowly used technology, presented only as an alternative to wired telegraphy and telephony to a broadcast medium, embraced by the public sphere?

This field of study has made a number of contributions to the advancement of past, present, and future society all starting from work on high-voltage transformers, , to groundbreaking developments in radio, wireless communications, ultrasonics and power systems. All contributing to everything that our modern day society is built off of.

It all started in 1882 when Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb, wrote a letter to the President of Columbia University, Fredrick A.P. Barnard, proposing the idea of adding an electrical engineering course to the Universities curriculum. Later that year, Edison found himself in lower Manhattan where he constituted the first central electric station. This generated a need for young engineers who understood electrical science and would soon change the face of electrical engineering for years to come.

In the early 1900's, the electrification of New York City had come to a close, and manufacturing was dominated by electrically powered industries. The department of electrical engineering played a vital role in providing the United States with first-rate electrical technology during World War 1. The radio played such a critical role in the first World War when it had emerged as a means of communication and entertainment. The further development of the electrical engineering field of study would only continue to emerge throughout the following years, and would eventually be attributed to changing the entire dynamic of the War.

When it comes to electronic technology, World War I defined the introduction of many new types of technology such as; new types of weapons, technologically advanced radios, and electric power amongst a broad range of other technologies that were advanced from this era.

One of the most important advances in electronic technology at this time was the transmission of voice rather than by means of radio. The radio crucial for communication purposes and played a vital role for all combatants during the war.

Electricity played a huge role in advancements during World War I. Electric signaling lamps, electric helm indicators, electric fire alarms, were a few of the many developments used on battleships during the war. Electric power turned guns and turrets and raised ammunition from the magazines up to the guns.

Upon entry into World War 1, commercial use for radio came to a close when private radio stations were ordered to be shut down or handed over to government control. As the war continued, it became illegal for U.S. citizens to own or carry an operational radio, in fact, it was actually considered Treason to possess wireless radio stations due to the fact that important information broadcast over radio stations put the US military at risk. Radio use in the United States soon became a monopoly, used only for war efforts.
