Gas Central Heating Versus Electric Central Heating?

I read this recently on the U-Switch website. It’s supposed to be a comparison of electric central heating and gas central heating. Have a look: U-Switch Central Heating Comparison The thing is, when I read it, I realised they were actually comparing electric storage heaters with gas central heating, so I felt compelled to write something to highlight the differences. If you compare gas central heating with electric central heating, fair enough. But it s not fair to compare gas central heating with electric storage heaters: that s a completely different thing. Electric storage heaters and electric central heating are two very different things. Here are the key variations: Electric storage heating systems store up heat through the night and emit it during the day. There is little control over when the heat can be emitted, and how much of it. On the other hand, electric central heating systems work on-demand. If it’s cold, you switch the heating on and within minutes the house start

Time to Replace a Sealed Flue Gas Boiler System? Here’s a Solution.

If you’ve been living with a sealed flue gas boiler it will soon be time to have it replaced. The serviceable lifetime tends to be around 10 years and most of the fan-flued models out there are older than that now. You will probably be aware that these boilers are no longer permissible by law, as they don’t offer the opportunity to be accessed for safety inspections. The issue is you are going to need to replace the entire flue system with one that isn’t concealed. This is going to cause quite a lot of disruption. If your flue is nowhere near an outside wall, then it’s going to need to be re-routed, and it can’t be hidden because it needs to be readily accessible for inspection. It’s quite worrying when you think about how it’s all going to look. The picture below shows an example, and it’s not pretty. If you upgrade a previously concealed gas flue system then this could be the result. So what’s the alternative? Well the good news is there’s an option that will avo

It’s that Time of the Year Again (When we Moan About Storage Heaters)

Yes it’s that time of year again. Spring – nice lighter evenings, if we’re lucky a bit less rain, and of course warmer days. All good, unless you have electric night storage heaters that is. If you do, you’ll relate to this time of year being one of the most infuriating. Typically spring can bring a mixture of weather. One day it can be quite warm, but the next it can change quite dramatically and you’ll be donning coats and possibly even gloves again if you venture out. When Weather Forecasts go Wrong Weather forecasts don’t tend to help much. If you’ve ever looked at one of those online ones and seen it state a 0% chance of rain, only to go out without your umbrella and then be caught in a deluge, you’ll know what I mean. You can t always predict the weather, which makes working out whether to put your storage heaters on a real challenge. What I’m getting at is, if you’ve got night storage heaters, you’ll probably dread this time of year because it’s all abou

Heatrae Sadia Electric Boilers Positively Acclaimed

The article I was reading in Housing Association Magazine a little while ago, that I wrote about in my last post, went into a bit of detail about Heatrae Sadia electric boilers and this one of the most popular makes we install. The article talked about how slim in design the boilers are and how they offer a consistent 99.8% efficiency at point of use. Jon Cockburn of Heatrae Sadia was quoted as saying: “One of the main advancements in the industry has been the introduction of electric wet central heating flow boilers. Used in conjunction with conventional wet radiators or underfloor heating systems, electric wet central heating boilers provide central heating on demand, when it’s actually needed, being controlled and operated by a programmer and thermostat, and working in a similar way to a gas fired boiler. Our Amptec electric boiler even modulates in the same way as a gas boiler, improving running efficiency. “Electric boilers can be teamed with direct hot water cylinders: a

The Best Way to Hot Water for your Home

There are lots of ways to get your hot water but usually it comes done to a main supply that’s heated through whatever central heating system you have. So it’s either stored in a tank or available on demand if you have a combi boiler, whether it’s gas or electric. You’ll generally find that up to date combi boilers are more energy efficient than a water heating system that works with a tank, like storage heaters for example. Hot Water Options Other than a gas or electric combi boiler, you can get your hot water from a solar hot water system, an immersion heater, an electric storage heater, directly through a mains electric shower or through instant water heaters. There’s also the option nowadays to get an instant hot water tap installed that delivers water hot enough to make your tea or coffee. There are lots of ways to get hot water to your taps. Electric Boiler Repairs

The great thing about electric boilers is that they don’t need too much maintenance and that they are less likely to suffer a fault than a gas boiler. However, from time to time you may find yourself in need of an electric boiler repair. It might be your hot water has stopped coming through, or your radiators aren’t warming up properly. The good news is that most electric boiler breakdowns are fairly easy to resolve. They do however call for specialist expertise and you need to make sure you call someone out with experience in electric central heating faults rather than just a general electrician. Engineers like this will also be able to resolve any connected issues you may have with your solar hot water or underfloor heating. Selectric Heating offers boiler repairs London wide. Electric Heating One Hundred Per Cent Efficient

Direct acting electric heating is one hundred per cent efficient when it comes to converting fuel into heat. Additionally, because it only gives out precisely the heat required, exactly when it is needed in the places it is required, it is also one hundred per cent effective. There was a report put out fairly recently by the Zero Carbon Hub on carbon compliance for the homes of the future. It showed how decarbonisation of grid electricity, something we talked about in our last post, will influence our choice of heating system over the next four decades. By 2028 we will reach a point where gas powered systems will no longer support carbon compliance. Electric Heating to be the Option of Choice by 2028 What they’ve said in this report is that by 2028 we will reach a point where gas powered systems will no longer support carbon compliance and that at this point, electric heating technologies will be the option of choice. In the scheme of things, that point is not really far off. Precis

From Storage Heaters to Electric Central Heating in a few Simple Steps

There’s no denying that storage heaters have their downsides. In winter they churn out heat during the day when you’re not in and leave you shivering under a blanket of an evening. In spring or autumn they leave you guessing what the weather’s going to be like the next day. Get it wrong and you’re either too hot, or back under that winter blanket. The only time they’re really any good is in the summer when you don’t need to use them at all. So, what’s the alternative when gas isn’t an option? Electric central heating. It offers full controllability of household heat and YOU decide when to switch it on and off. Plus you get hot water on demand rather than from a limited tank supply. If you feel the time is right to change from electric storage heaters to a more controllable heating system, think electric central heating. Quick Switch An electric boiler is needed to power the heating system and hot water. All we need to do is take out your water tank and fit the boiler

It makes you wonder doesn’t it, what we used to do without the internet? I remember years ago if you wanted to buy a spare part for something you had to write a letter to the manufacturer. Then they’d write back – well usually – telling you whether they still stocked it and if so, how much it cost. Then you wrote out a cheque or got a Postal Order from the Post Office (lost you now, haven’t I?!), sent it off and within say 6 or 8 weeks, you’d get a little package through the door containing your long awaited spare part. Business as Usual, Any Time of Year So, aren’t we lucky these days? Well most of the time. Landlords with Electric Heating – Don’t Overlook an Annual Service!

It’s common to hear calls to action for landlords – and homeowners – to get their gas boiler serviced and ready for the onset of winter proper. But not so for electric boilers. But why is this? OK so electric boilers are low maintenance. They don’t need annual safety checks. And they have naturally long lives without needing much attention. However, a boiler is a boiler and an annual service will never do any harm. In fact, it will do a lot of good. Three Good Reasons to get an Annual Electric Boiler Service We recommend any landlord with electric boilers in their properties to arrange an annual electric boiler service by an NICEIC accredited electrical engineer. There are numerous benefits. Firstly, it will save any out-of-hours emergency call outs, which of course you really don’t want. Secondly, it provides reassurance for tenants, making the property more let-able seeing as you can pretty much guarantee heat and hot water throughout the winter. An annual electric boiler

Three Groups of People Loving Thermaflow Electric Boilers

According to electric boiler manufacturers Thermaflow, there are three main groups who can draw significant benefits from their electric boilers and central heating. These are: Housing Developers Thermaflow say their electric combi boilers are easier to install than most other boilers, whether those are electric or gas. The reason being, there’s no need for Gas Safe registered certification as there’s no gas input or flue. For developers this is also a major benefit where flues pose problems in built up areas or where they will limit the design of a building. There’s no need for an annual landlord gas safety check which means money saved. How Landlords can Benefit from Making Energy Efficient Improvements

National news reports towards the end of 2014 revealed that landlords of Victorian properties may find themselves in the situation of having to make changes so that the properties become more energy efficient, according to government proposals. Apparently new legislation is set to come in that means owners of properties ranking below the lowest energy efficiency categories will have to make improvements from 2018 or be stopped from letting from tenants. This could be anything from insulating and installing double glazing.  Also, by April 2016, tenants could be given the right to ask for permission to make their own energy efficiency measures. Funding Schemes Whilst landlords might consider the measures tough, in actual fact there are many advantages of improving energy efficiency in rental properties. Plus there’s the fact that the government is keen to ensure landlords don’t have to foot extensive bills, saying they won’t be obliged to make any improvements unless there is a g

Electric Boilers and Tower Blocks

I read an interesting article online this week. It was in Housing Association Magazine and the technical editor was talking about the growing popularity of electric boilers for tower blocks. He was saying that most of the UK’s ageing tower blocks tend to pose technical challenges for anyone aiming to bring them up to date. Void spaces or risers behind precast panels and concrete sections are never going to be easy to access which means pipework replacement will be incredibly complex. It’s therefore the case that most local authority flats above two storeys high will have been fitted with night storage heaters. Residents won’t be enjoying it, what with having to guess whether the heating is needed the next day and covering the cost of boosting it up should it get too cold. Considering Your Boiler Replacement Options

How cold it is in this country! It seems that winter lasts for ages then there’s a glimmer of spring and then it’s autumn for a couple of weeks, then winter again. Precisely why boilers are probably the most important appliance in the home. So when it comes time to replace your boiler, it makes sense to thoroughly explore ALL your options so you know you are making the most of boosting energy efficiency, and saving money too. Plus you’ll want the most reliable option, and you need to think about the long term costs of maintenance, servicing and repair. A lot of people who have gas boilers tend to explore only the alternatives similar to what they’ve been used to, i.e. just gas. But there is a lot more choice than just gas and in fact, it is reckoned that by 2028 we are going to reach a point where gas powered systems will no longer support carbon compliance and electric technologies will be the option of choice. Who’s Using Electric Central Heating – and Why?

We’ve been installing electric central heating systems for a few years now and we’ve found quite a range of people showing an interest. Owners of Smaller Properties Firstly, those with smaller properties are keen on electric heating because the boilers are compact and pretty much silent. They can be located anywhere as there’s no flue, making them flexible for bijou homes. Property Developers in London Secondly, property developers in London favour electric central heating. When you’re building in areas where properties are in close proximity to others, or to local authority buildings, you are not permitted to install flues. So electric heating is the ideal option having no flue. As well as this, electric heating is highly efficient and economical too, spelling good news for buyers or tenants. Why Electric is the Heating of the Future

47 per cent of the UK’s total carbon emissions comes from domestic heating, the majority of which is fuelled by gas boiler and central heating systems. As everyone knows, the government is keen to drastically reduce carbon emissions, and doing away with fossil fuels like gas is one initiative they’ve been working on for some time. Its 2050 Pathways Analysis has looked at ways of achieving a low carbon economy and the resounding message is that a major move towards electric in the realms of industry, transport and heating is well on the cards. Decarbonising Electricity Grid electricity is undergoing decarbonisation with the government increasing the number of wind farms, pushing solar, constructing nuclear power stations and broadening micro-generation.
