'The party is acting as if the entire world is a GOP primary'

'The party is acting as if the entire world is a GOP primary' | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
It's funny to think back to the spring, when Republican leaders seemed cautiously optimistic about the road ahead. Sure, 2012 clearly didn't work out as planned, but the party had a detailed

Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People
American elections feature an epic struggle between actual people trying to express their views in the face of fictional "people" (i.e., Corporations) trying to buy influence. I want to highlight topics such as corrupt money in politics, campaign lies and dishonesty, voter suppression.

Here are 5 infuriating examples of facts making people dumber

Here are 5 infuriating examples of facts making people dumber | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
The notorious "backfire effect" has now been captured in multiple studies.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

This is depressing.  Presenting conservatives with facts can make them even more committed to their erroneously held positions.  I suppose this is related to some conservatives' tendency to reject science.

Two questions:

(1) to avoid this backfire effect, what strategies can be employed to try to shift opinions?

(2) are there similar studies showing this backfire effect and/or systematic ignoring of facts by progressives?

Missouri GOP leader calls Ferguson voter-registration drive 'disgusting'

Missouri GOP leader calls Ferguson voter-registration drive 'disgusting' | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Here's hoping those who are "disgusted" by the voter-registration drive will take a moment to consider a different perspective.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

The head staffer of the Missouri GOP is outraged that those wanting change in Ferguson are trying to register voters so that voter turnout among the African American community is higher than a measly 12%.

Because rioting is a preferred method of advocating for change?

What more evidence do you need that the GOP supports democracy only when it can limit voting to its preferred voters?

Voter ID laws fix a fake problem by creating a real one

Voter ID laws fix a fake problem by creating a real one | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Voter ID laws do nothing about the actual voter fraud problems. But they do hurt thousands of voters.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Actual cases of voter fraud tend to reside in the misuse of absentee ballots.  But the GOP does not want to tighten absentee ballot use because those ballots tend to be more popular among "their" voters.  Instead, they pass Voter ID laws trying to prevent the wrong kind of voter from exercising his or her franchise.
