Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People
American elections feature an epic struggle between actual people trying to express their views in the face of fictional "people" (i.e., Corporations) trying to buy influence. I want to highlight topics such as corrupt money in politics, campaign lies and dishonesty, voter suppression.

Democrats who voted for the CRomnibus have received twice as much money from the finance industry as the ‘no’ voters

Democrats who voted for the CRomnibus have received twice as much money from the finance industry as the ‘no’ voters | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
The vote was as much about alliances as it was about party.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Surprise, surprise.  This atrocious bill further guts campaign finance laws and includes a bill written verbatim by Citibank that ensures that taxpayers continue to subsidize big banks' reckless activities so they can make windfall profits--until they fail.

If it wasn't clear already the corrosive role that money plays in our supposedly democratic system, this is Exhibit A.  Shameful.

Who Wants to Buy a Politician?

Who Wants to Buy a Politician? | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
After Citizens United, it turns out that surprisingly few wealthy people and corporations are using campaign donations to influence elections.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

The facts in this article seem to contradict the facts in the other article from the NYT I just posted.  The fact is that spending is at astronomical levels, whether they are actually setting new records or just coming very close to matching previous records.  And, that (unlike individuals who may give $3 or $100 to a candidate) corporations and rich folks don't just give away money to feel good.

Giving huge sums of money may not result in a direct quid pro quo, like a bribe.  But it surely provides access to the politicians and that can lead to the undemocratic specter of corporations writing legislation that provides direct benefits, such as Citibank sneaking in language to the "Cromnibus" bill that will enable it to gamble with taxpayer money knowing that if Citibank bets wrong, the taxpayers will bail them out again.

Why this author doesn't seem to understand this impact of pollitical money is beyond me.

Literacy tests were outlawed for a reason | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
The hosts of "Fox & Friends" think it'd be "great" to have Americans pass tests before they can cast a ballot. They're wrong.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

The real irony is that if there were a test of facts that one had to pass in order to be able to vote, so many Fox News viewers would fail miserably, as it has been documented by multiple studies that those who get their news from Fox News are the most misinformed of all.

If The Supreme Court Reads This Study, It Could End Partisan Gerrymandering Forever

If The Supreme Court Reads This Study, It Could End Partisan Gerrymandering Forever | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
A new study out of Duke University casts serious doubts on the reasoning of the justices who have thus-far refused to strike down unconstitutional gerrymanders.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

The headline is hyperbolic and I think wrongly assumes that the Supremes always make decisions based on fact and logic.  But the study discussed and linked in this article offers interesting, objective analysis supporting the common sense observation that North Carolina's congressional districts reeked of naked partisanship when the 2012 election resulted in 4 Democrats elected vs. 9 Republicans, despite Democrats winning over 50% of the votes.

From the summary of the study itself:

"When random districts are drawn and the results of the 2012 election were re-tabulated under the drawn districtings, we find that an average of 7.6 democratic representatives are elected. 95% of the randomly sampled redistrictings produced between 6 and 9 Democrats."

It's Pretty Much Just Fox Viewers Who Think Voter Fraud Is A Problem | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
There's what some might call a bit of a divide about what is really plaguing voting in the United States: voter fraud or voter disenfranchisement.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Since voter fraud is objectively-speaking virtually non-existent, this proves once again that those who are fed a steady diet of disinformation on Fox News are simply stupider than those who are not.
