GOP Official Calls Teenage Labor Advocate 'A Radical B*tch' | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Steve Kush, the chairman of Bernalillo County Republican Party in New Mexico, called a 19-year-old Working America volunteer a "radical bitch" on Twitter Tuesday night after she testified before the county commission in favor of raising the minimum...
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

And, the county's former GOP executive director insinuated that another labor advocate was a streetwalking prostitute.

And, the Republicans wonder how they can secure the votes of more women?

Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People
American elections feature an epic struggle between actual people trying to express their views in the face of fictional "people" (i.e., Corporations) trying to buy influence. I want to highlight topics such as corrupt money in politics, campaign lies and dishonesty, voter suppression.

College students have joined a legal challenge in North Carolina, claiming that the state’s requirements discriminate based on age.

Brilliant strategy backed up by undeniable factual basis for the argument that GOP-led state legislatures are discriminating against students because they tend to vote Democratic.

GOP’s voter fraud humiliation: Turns out Wisconsin’s worst case is a Republican | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Maybe the real reason Scott Walker and Reince Preibus think their state needs tougher laws is a guilty conscience
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Actual voter fraud by a Republican voter for Scott Walker.  But he used absentee ballots  -- and voter ID laws would not have prevented this fraud.  GOP obviously not actually concerned about voter fraud.  They just want to suppress votes of people likely to vote against them.

Is There a Fox Effect?

Continuing our 'Hard to Handle' series, TPM Reader RL talks about the acculturating effects of two very different institutions: the US military and Fox News ...

I'm sure you've heard many stories from your readers about kindly relatives who were racists. Mine go back a couple of generations. I was raised in a military family and despite the conservatism inherent in the military, socially (at least as far as race goes) it has always been reasonably progressive. By the time I was growing up in the 60's it was fully integrated and my parents racial views more or less followed the military lead.

New G.O.P. Bid to Limit Voting in Swing States

New G.O.P. Bid to Limit Voting in Swing States | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Already, nine states, under Republican control, have passed measures making it harder to vote since the beginning of 2013.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Yes, it is true that Democrats are trying to make it easier to register and to preserve the ability to vote early and on weekends.  Yes, it is true that these efforts to expand the electorate tend to favor Democrats.

But the two parties are not taking equivalent positions. Preventing the people from having full access to their franchise is morally indefensible.

That Old-Time Whistle

That Old-Time Whistle | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
American conservatism is still, after all these years, largely driven by claims that liberals are giving money away to “those people.”
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

I know this article is not directly about an election or voting or campaigning.  But it is about a former GOP VP candidate and probable contender in in 2016 or after.  And, to me, it nails in one sentence an analysis that explains so much of what the GOP is all about these days: <<Race is the Rosetta Stone that makes sense of many otherwise incomprehensible aspects of U.S. politics.>>

Try it out the next time you are trying to understand Republican hypocrisy to see if Krugman is right.
