Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People
American elections feature an epic struggle between actual people trying to express their views in the face of fictional "people" (i.e., Corporations) trying to buy influence. I want to highlight topics such as corrupt money in politics, campaign lies and dishonesty, voter suppression.

New G.O.P. Bid to Limit Voting in Swing States

New G.O.P. Bid to Limit Voting in Swing States | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Already, nine states, under Republican control, have passed measures making it harder to vote since the beginning of 2013.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Yes, it is true that Democrats are trying to make it easier to register and to preserve the ability to vote early and on weekends.  Yes, it is true that these efforts to expand the electorate tend to favor Democrats.

But the two parties are not taking equivalent positions. Preventing the people from having full access to their franchise is morally indefensible.

That Old-Time Whistle

That Old-Time Whistle | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
American conservatism is still, after all these years, largely driven by claims that liberals are giving money away to “those people.”
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

I know this article is not directly about an election or voting or campaigning.  But it is about a former GOP VP candidate and probable contender in in 2016 or after.  And, to me, it nails in one sentence an analysis that explains so much of what the GOP is all about these days: <<Race is the Rosetta Stone that makes sense of many otherwise incomprehensible aspects of U.S. politics.>>

Try it out the next time you are trying to understand Republican hypocrisy to see if Krugman is right.

New research shows the race and class bases of voter identification laws.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

No surprise, but important data to support those challenging voter suppression efforts in Court.  Here are the key take-aways:

<<More specifically, restrictive proposals were more likely to be introduced in states with larger African-American and non-citizen populations and with higher minority turnout in the previous presidential election.  These proposals were also more likely to be introduced in states where both minority and low-income turnout had increased in recent elections.  A similar picture emerged for the actual passage of these proposals. States in which minority turnout had increased since the previous presidential election were more likely to pass restrictive legislation.>>

Hoorah for truth!  <<But that fact is, it ought to be abundantly clear to everybody in this state that there is no massive voter fraud. The only thing that we do have in this state is we have long lines of people who want to vote.
