Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People

The 2012 Presidential Election will feature an epic struggle between actual people trying to express their views in the face of fictional "people" (i.e., Corporations) trying to buy influence. I want to highlight topics such as corrupt money in politics, campaign lies and dishonesty, voter suppression.

From the 47% to ‘gifts’: Mitt Romney’s ugly vision of politics

From the 47% to ‘gifts’: Mitt Romney’s ugly vision of politics | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it

<<When Romney thinks he’s behind closed doors and he’s just telling other people like him how politics really works, the picture he paints is so ugly as to be bordering on dystopic. It’s not just about class, but about worth, and legitimacy. His voters are worth something to the economy — they’re producers — and they respond to legitimate appeals about how to best manage the country. The Democrats’ voters are drags on the economy — moochers — and they respond to crass pay-offs.

Romney doesn’t voice these opinions in public. He knows better. But so did the voters. That’s what you see in the overwhelming rejection Romney suffered among African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and young voters. They sensed that Romney fundamentally didn’t respect them and their role in the economy, and they were right.>>

Ohio GOP: Oops on bill to curb student voting

Ohio GOP: Oops on bill to curb student voting | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Ohio's House Republicans last month passed a bill that would punish universities if they help students vote.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

This is too amusing.  Supposedly to prevent college students from voting in Ohio when their "home" is another state (why?  to prevent them from voting in both their supposed "home state" and Ohio?), Republicans in the Ohio House passed a bill that would force universities to charge out-of-state students the lower in-state tuition if the schools gave such students a letter proving they live at school.

They apparently thought this would cause the universities to stop giving such letters -- depriving students of their constitutional right to vote -- so that the schools woud not lose the extra tuition that comes from out-of-state students.

Instead, the GOP now realizes the legislation might have the unintended effect of causing MORE out-of-state students to register and to vote, so they can qualify for the lower in-state tuition!  Oops!  Can't have THAT!

Since the GOP's goal is transparently to REDUCE the number of students voting, this bill is likely dead.  The efforts of Republicans to suppress voting by disfavored groups is so pathetic that is is sometimes comical.  This is a prime example.

The Best 10 Ironies About The ‘Obama Phone’

The Best 10 Ironies About The ‘Obama Phone’ | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Tweet This article by Harold Feld originally appeared on The Wet Machine, a group blog on telecom policy, software, science, technology, and writing. There is so much about the “Obama Phone” nonsense that tickles my funny bone in odd places.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

Although not specifically about the 2012 election, the fabled "Obama Phone" was one of the more colorful weapons used by the GOP to rile up its base against the re-election of the President.  As this article points out, however, the program that provides free cell phones for qualified citizens from the federal government, is the culmination of a program championed by the Reagan administration to subsidize rural telephony and expanded by George W. Bush to wireless communications.  In other words, this is a Republican-initiated and expanded program -- one of the few that actually help poor folks and that is subsidized by the rest of us.

But in their hatred for Obama, Southern and rural lawmakers are pressing to eliminate what they wrongly regard as the "Obama Phone."  If they succeed, they may inadvertently cause their own poor and rural constituents to lose their lifelines to the workforce, to emergency services, essentially, to the world around them.

Oh, hatred and ignorance...how blinding you are!

Ohio Republicans Push Law To Penalize Colleges For Helping Students Vote

Ohio Republicans Push Law To Penalize Colleges For Helping Students Vote | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Republicans in the Ohio Legislature are pushing for a plan that would cost the state’s public universities tens of millions of dollars if they provide students with proof-of-address documents to help them register to vote.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

The Green Lantern Theory runs rampant

The Green Lantern Theory runs rampant | Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People | Scoop.it
Clearly, the phenomenon needs a name. There are so many Beltway pundits blaming President Obama for Republican intransigence so often -- for reasons that vary from strange to stupid -- that there must be a label to describe this runaway meme.
Daniel Mayeda's insight:

This is actually a very even-handed, exactly right analysis.  Trying to "lead" the House Republican to do anything is far more difficult than herding cats.  All they can agree on is that they oppose Obama; but they can't reach any kind of consensus on the best way to oppose him.  Whether you like or dislike Nancy Pelosi's policies, you have to give her credit for guiding the House to pass bills.  And, the Senate, with its ludicrous supermajority requirement to get anything done is little better.

Michael Charney's curator insight, May 4, 10:50 AM

I only partially agree with the analysis; while there is certainly such a theory (of sorts), it's also true that The President has a leadership responsibility that rises above the ordinary; it comes with the territory (and the election victory). In this sense, Obama is justifiably criticized, IMO
