Election by Actual (Not Fictional) People

What this expert on election law said: “What the bill would do is penalize public universities for providing their students with the documents they need to vote,” Daniel Tokaji, a professor and election law expert at Ohio State University told TPM. “It’s a transparent effort at vote suppression — about the most blatant and shameful we’ve seen in this state, which is saying quite a lot.”

This is almost as bad as that idiotic Kentucky Democratic group that attacked Mitch McConnell for having a Chinese American wife.  (With all the things on which one can profitably attack McConnell and Haley, why go to race?)  So, to be fair, Dems have racist yahoos, too. Hopefully, this guy will be slapped down instead of tolerated.

This is actually a very even-handed, exactly right analysis.  Trying to "lead" the House Republican to do anything is far more difficult than herding cats.  All they can agree on is that they oppose Obama; but they can't reach any kind of consensus on the best way to oppose him.  Whether you like or dislike Nancy Pelosi's policies, you have to give her credit for guiding the House to pass bills.  And, the Senate, with its ludicrous supermajority requirement to get anything done is little better.

I missed this Op-Ed when it was first published two months ago, but it is worth noting, especially Rosen's conclusion:

And, the county's former GOP executive director insinuated that another labor advocate was a streetwalking prostitute.

And, the Republicans wonder how they can secure the votes of more women?

Although not specifically about the 2012 election, the fabled "Obama Phone" was one of the more colorful weapons used by the GOP to rile up its base against the re-election of the President.  As this article points out, however, the program that provides free cell phones for qualified citizens from the federal government, is the culmination of a program championed by the Reagan administration to subsidize rural telephony and expanded by George W. Bush to wireless communications.  In other words, this is a Republican-initiated and expanded program -- one of the few that actually help poor folks and that is subsidized by the rest of us.

But in their hatred for Obama, Southern and rural lawmakers are pressing to eliminate what they wrongly regard as the "Obama Phone."  If they succeed, they may inadvertently cause their own poor and rural constituents to lose their lifelines to the workforce, to emergency services, essentially, to the world around them.

Oh, hatred and ignorance...how blinding you are! 

Pathetic and immoral efforts by Republicans to deprive American citizens of their most cherished right.

Really, North Carolina GOP?  You essentially are willing to tax parents if their college-student children exercise the right to vote?  Don't you find it immoral to discourage/suppress/tax voting?

Gotta keep all the conservatives inside the bubble.

Extremely sad and pathetic.  Where have the Republicans gone who, despite their ideological differences with Democrats, nevertheless sought to govern, rather than merely obstruct everything?

Rather than trying to come up with policies that might appeal to young people, the GOP just tries to enact pathetic tricks to suppress student voting.  Pathetic.

Absolutely pathetic but unfortunately, will be lapped up by Fox News' low-information, reality-challenged viewers.

And, of course, another one just re-emerged ast week: opposition by southerners to federal funds for hurricane relief for New Jersey/NY, but demands for federal relief for West, TX (and earlier for Katrina).

Could this be satire?  It really reads like an "Onion" story, doesn't it?

This is a very insightful contribution to the debate over whether the GOP can actually be effective in reaching out to communities of color.  I certainly have experience with the notion discussed in this piece of conservatives who refuse to acknowlege the Romney campaign's use of racist dog whistles or that the Tea Party attracts racists.
