Keeping Students Engaged in the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus

Keeping Students Engaged in the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus | eLearning | Scoop.it

As an online instructor, I can fulfill the minimum requirements of the university regarding interacting with students, or I can create a learning environment that facilitates student engagement in the classroom. Students enroll in online classes because of the need for scheduling flexibility, work-life-school balance, costs, and convenience. Although online learning holds many advantages, the potential drawbacks revolve around the lack of personal interaction between the instructor and student, as well as the student-to-student contact. Keeping students engaged in the course is a vital function of an effective instructor.

Is Content Curation in Your Skill Set? It Should Be. | eLearning | Scoop.it

Curation is a growing need in organizations, and as such, a growing competency for those focused on worker performance. At the same time, the vision of what this competency looks like in practice is cloudy. How will what we do look different when we add curation to our skill sets?

Sure it is!!  Last week I showed my students how to scoopit.  I thought that since they seem to love Facebook, Scoopit was going to be a wow experience for them.  However, contrary to my expectations most of them did not show a real interest, or at least the kind of interest I expected.  What a pain!  Maybe it is a matter of time, culture, love for reading and writing, etc.  From a group of 12 youngers, only 2 of them said:  Thanks teacher, I like it!  Well... I will keep on trying...

Good article on content curation. So important nowadays ,with so much information around us, we need tools to process it (such as netvibes, diigo, delicious, feedly, etc.)

  1. It is free to use.
  2. It requires no registration.
  3. It provides educators and students with an intuitive, easy-to-learn photo editing tool.

And the tools are:

* Picadilo

Using Content Curation Tools to Engage Students

Using Content Curation Tools to Engage Students | eLearning | Scoop.it

TheHubEdu uses a shelf mechanism to organize content. I often have my students search for and post on their shelves content that is relevant to what we discussed in class for the week, and then explain why it was relevant. Sometimes I have them search my own shelves of vetted resources. On the site, users can follow other users or users’ shelves, effectively creating their own personal learning network. Allowing students to explore, discover, and contribute expands their thinking and actually gives me insight into what they are taking away from the lectures or readings.

Tips for Building Social Presence in Your Online Class | Faculty Focus

Tips for Building Social Presence in Your Online Class | Faculty Focus | eLearning | Scoop.it

In their framework outlining educational experiences for students, Garrison, Anderson, and Archer (2000) identify and explain the critical elements of a Community of Inquiry that supports instruction and learning. The elements include: cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence. For online classes, many new online instructors tend to focus on the cognitive presence and teaching presence, and overlook the necessity of the social presence. They’ll build great online modules that help students enhance their understanding of course content but forget to attend to the critical social aspects that engage students and foster community building. While these aspects can happen naturally in face-to-face courses, they must be intentionally built into online classes.
