Importance of 3D Printing in Education ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Importance of 3D Printing in Education ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | eLearning tools | Scoop.it

3D printing is a technology that allows users to turn any digital file into a three dimensional physical product. 3D printing also allows for massive customization and unlike with music and movies, everything that is printed is protected by copyright. One of the good things about this printing technology is that it changes the dynamic of consumer culture. In other words, it turns users from being  passive consumers to active creators.

Teacher Dashboard for Google Apps

Teacher Dashboard for Google Apps | eLearning tools | Scoop.it

Teachers and administrators get a snap-shot view of each student’s most recent work in Docs, Sites, Blogger and Picasa, organized by class and student. Behind the scenes we create a folder in drive for each class for each student, then we give the right teachers access – no more sharing issues for students – student just drop their homework in the right folder for each class.

Mark Ayton's curator insight, May 23, 9:45 AM

This is amazing!

You've bit the bullet and started using Google Docs with your learners. They're happily sharing stuff with you, but there's so much stuff in your shared folder it's all becoming a mess. How do you organise everything so that only the relevant stuff is shared, it's all in a structure your can navigate, and keep track of everything?

Shame it's not free, but at $4 per student per year Teacher Dashboard for Google Apps might just save your sanity ;-)

Creative Commons is a great source for an extremely wide variety of photos, sketches and graphics that can be used free of charge. No licensing or royalties, EVER! It is a way to share work by making it available free of charge while still protecting it from others taking advantage of your work. Multiple levels of licensing/protection can be attached, from free use and editing rights all the way to non-commercial personal/educational use only with attribution, commercial use requires permission.

As the British Library posts its greatest literary treasures online, new research reveals that young people could be struggling to engage with the classics

As the British Library posts its greatest literary treasures online, new research reveals that young people could be struggling to engage with the classics | eLearning tools | Scoop.it
The British Library has posted over 1000 of its greatest literary treasures online in a new website, Discovering Literature – including the manuscripts of Blake, Wordsworth, Shelley, Keats, Austen, Dickens and Wilde, the largest collection of childhood writings of the Brontë sisters, and other unique artefacts which shed new light on their life and works
Anthony Beal's insight:

As the British Library posts its greatest literary treasures online, new research reveals that young people could be struggling to engage with the classics http://pressandpolicy.bl.uk/Press-Releases/As-the-British-Library-posts-its-greatest-literary-treasures-online-new-research-reveals-that-young-6a2.aspx

The research was carried out in schools and colleges

•           Overall, it is clear that there is a desire among English teachers to make their lessons more inspiring; almost three in five (57%) of teachers say that it is difficult to inspire students with the resources currently available. Additionally, they perceive students as struggling to identify with both classic authors of English literature (82%) and engage with older literary texts (83%).

•           English teachers perceive that students prefer digital media than books (83%), and that overall, students rely on online resources for research (93%). However, they also tend to say that current resources available to students are uninspiring (57%), and that they appreciate the value of first-hand original manuscripts and historical documents for students (82%).

•           Similarly, there is a desire among teachers to have more access to resources (90%), recognition that English literature needs to embrace digital technology (86%), and that access to digital resources needs to be improved (82%). English literature is extremely highly regarded by English teachers, and student access to it is considered to be of enormous importance.

How to Create a Bibliography in Google Documents

How to Create a Bibliography in Google Documents | eLearning tools | Scoop.it

One of the most useful new Add-ons for Google Documents is the EasyBib Bibliography Creator. The EasyBib Bibliography Creator makes it easy to properly cite resources and format a bibliography in APA, MLA, or Chicago style. The screenshots below provide directions for the process.

Anthony Beal's insight:

Had a go with this and it created an alphabetical APA list of references which automatically updates when changes or additions are made. Powered by WorldCat

Chris Eller's curator insight, April 29, 5:17 PM

As a fan of Google Docs, I am still frustrated at its lack of features...such as creating a bibliography. All of the tools available (Papers, Sente, etc.) integrate well with Microsoft Word. Not so with Google Docs. Perhaps we are turning a corner with the addition of add-ons like EasyBib. Still a long ways from the powerful integration of Papers and Word.

Our authors come from an array of backgrounds, but they have one thing in common: they know first hand and want to help more libraries to understand the power of open source. Serving the community, managing the library system, and providing quality care are all aspects of what makes open source a better choice for libraries.

When you're comfortable with MS Office, despite the sharing and real-time collaboration advantages, the leap to Google Docs can seem just too much! Then there's all your existing Word, Excel and Powerpoint files, will they all need reworking?

Fret no more! MS has replicated just about every Google feature in a very familiar Office environment. It's web-based so will run on any device with a browser. It has all the common MS Office menu items and features, plus it allows sharing and real time collaboration. There are even forms for collecting survey / quiz data in spreadsheets.

I'm not aware of any scripting / add-in capability yet, but I'm sure it won't be far away.

Using Twitter in Academic Teaching

Much is written about using Twitter for research, but what about using it in learning and teaching? It has plenty of applications there as well.

This workshop presentation (containing a link to the handout) covers what Twitter is, why it's useful, debunks some Twitter myths, and illustrates ideas for Twitter use in modules, lectures and lab-sessions, using current examples from academics. It also covers embedding a Twitter stream in a Blackboard VLE.

Channylt's curator insight, March 31, 9:40 AM

An example of how a social media web 2.0 micro-blogging tool Twitter can be used for academic teaching and learning in the digital age. As a digital designer social media is the new frontier that I am excited to learn about and to use in an effective and purposeful way in e-learning design.

The constructivist learning model allows teachers to underpin specific learning outcomes or guidelines in how they would like learners to use Twitter but this does not mean that learners cannot go beyond this.

Teachers can apply the SAMR model at all phases but I will focus on the transformational nature of twitter and that it has allowed Redefinition creating new tasks that were previously inconceivable.
