Apple make some great Apps e.g. iMovie, Keynote, Pages, Numbers, iPhoto and GarageBand. People will shell out for them because they are fab.

 

However, in the new VP era, it is more expensive for schools managing small class sets e.g… iMovie £2.99, Keynote£6.99, Pages £6.99, Numbers £6.99, iPhoto £2.99 and GarageBand £2.99 on up to 20 iPads will cost a wapping (no pun intended) £600.

 

So if you’ve not been saving your pennies you need to do some smart thinking.

"The tablet computer is not a new idea, but recently has had an impact on learning and teaching across a range of institutions in the UK and elsewhere. In this session I will try to tackle the following questions.

 

What do we currently understand to be a tablet? What is the primary functionality? How are tablets being used right now for supporting, and enhancing learning and teaching? What sort of learning activities and scenarios are making best use of the tablet format? Are these devices for content consumption, content creation, interaction, or all three? So where next? Where will tablets take us? Do institutions purchase tablets for all their students? Or do we let or require students to buy and bring their own? And if the latter what does this mean for how we organise provision?..."

Microsoft has unveiled Surface - its own-brand family of tablets.

 

The touchscreen computers will be powered by its upcoming Windows 8 system and contain a choice of an Intel or ARM-based processor.

 

It allows the firm to challenge Apple's bestselling iPad with a device that can run standard applications such as its own Office programs and Photoshop.

 

Technology expert Fox Van Allen from Tecca.com, Catherine Clinch from Filmnewsbriefs.com and Jason Boog from Galleycat.com gave their reaction to the device.
