Richard Olemann announced in the Moodle.org forums last Friday that the Flexibase theme has been updated for Moodle 3.0. As noted on gitHub, there is no 2.0 version of the theme as they development team has decided to head straight for 3.0 to keep in line with Moodle release numbers (indeed, the release of the theme is actually version 3.1).

CPR training has changed modalities since I first became certified over a decade ago. A recent study was published in which Moodle was used to host a CPR training. The Brazilian study: “Using educational technology for CPR training: The development of an educational distance program through the Moodle platform” was conducted by Moreira, Santos, Garbe, Carmagnani, Salvador, & Carvalho and appeared in the November 2015 publication of the journal Resuscitation. Researchers designed a remote, self-paced training with materials which were “composed of multimedia features such as text, illustrations, animations, interactive activities and videos.”

Over 1000 people participated in the study, and researchers concluded “It is possible that the use of this technology for training professionals can be a useful strategy to be applied in large hospitals…this technology enables constant access to content, which may result in improved care for victims of cardiac arrest.”

Curiosity pulled my browser to RedCross.org. A quick peek at their offerings, and I found many classes (First Aid/CPR/AED) are currently presented as hybrid courses, involving both online and in-person segments. Perhaps the Brazilian study and Red Cross’s offerings are indicative of a new trend – medical training in the online format.

If you’re a newcomer to the field of e-learning or instructional design (ID), you might feel overwhelmed by the amount of information available online regarding the various ID models and all the different learning theories. Where to start?

If you want to get the most out of an open source community like Moodle, hands down, your best best is to participate, participate, and participate. In the case of Moodle this participation can come in any number of forms: from the super technically driven plugin and theme development, to being a Moodlepreneur™ and creating a value added service, attending events like Moots, or just chiming in on the forums. Heck – even placing a complaint or bug you need help with is helping the community as a whole.

One of the easiest ways to contribute to the Moodle community is by making sure that your Moodle site is registered with Moodle.org. Instructions about how to register your site are here. It is a super simple process that can be done by your site administrator in five minutes.

Moodle.org recently published a post laying out the benefits of registering, and the value couldn’t be clearer. By registering:

1. You benefit because you are included in all relevant communications related to updates, security fixes, new releases, and more.
2. Your site contributes to the worldwide analytics of Moodle usage.
3. Your site becomes recognized in the list of registered sites for your country (this is optional).

And, hey, the registration process is totally secure. Your information isn’t shared with anyone and registering doesn’t give Moodle HQ (or anyone else) the ability to enter your site and have a look around. Everything that is tracked for stats is anonymized and aggregated.
