12 Barriers To Innovation In Education

12 Barriers To Innovation In Education | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

"Innovation is not something that just happens–or, rather it does given the right chemistry. Oftentimes this chemistry is referred to locally in schools as “climate,” but climate is only a small part of the formula. Where innovation comes from is an popular topic recently as new projects are increasingly visible, and due to digital reach, impactful across fields and industries. Right now, let’s stick to innovation in public education."

Here Is A No-Brainer Contribution: Register Your Moodle Site

Here Is A No-Brainer Contribution: Register Your Moodle Site | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

If you want to get the most out of an open source community like Moodle, hands down, your best best is to participate, participate, and participate. In the case of Moodle this participation can come in any number of forms: from the super technically driven plugin and theme development, to being a Moodlepreneur™ and creating a value added service, attending events like Moots, or just chiming in on the forums. Heck – even placing a complaint or bug you need help with is helping the community as a whole.

One of the easiest ways to contribute to the Moodle community is by making sure that your Moodle site is registered with Moodle.org. Instructions about how to register your site are here. It is a super simple process that can be done by your site administrator in five minutes.

Moodle.org recently published a post laying out the benefits of registering, and the value couldn’t be clearer. By registering:

1. You benefit because you are included in all relevant communications related to updates, security fixes, new releases, and more.
2. Your site contributes to the worldwide analytics of Moodle usage.
3. Your site becomes recognized in the list of registered sites for your country (this is optional).

And, hey, the registration process is totally secure. Your information isn’t shared with anyone and registering doesn’t give Moodle HQ (or anyone else) the ability to enter your site and have a look around. Everything that is tracked for stats is anonymized and aggregated.

3 Things Google Can Teach Us About Microlearning

Keep it simple.
In an age when the temptation to add widgets to websites can be almost overwhelming, Google has stuck with a blank white page adorned only by a one-word logo, a search box, and two buttons. Similarly, microlearning is best when it follows the Albert Einstein adage to “make things as simple as possible, but no simpler”. If we want to accomplish real behavior change in a 5-minute web module, everything in that module must be dedicated to the same purpose. The media, the activities, the text – all must be focused on the same goal. Even worthwhile objectives like “learner engagement” detract from microlearning because the format creates its own engagement. Google works because it’s a user-friendly way to find what we need quickly. Microlearning must be the same.

Flexibase Theme Updated For 3.0

Flexibase Theme Updated For 3.0 | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
Richard Olemann announced in the Moodle.org forums last Friday that the Flexibase theme has been updated for Moodle 3.0. As noted on gitHub, there is no 2.0 version of the theme as they development team has decided to head straight for 3.0 to keep in line with Moodle release numbers (indeed, the release of the theme is actually version 3.1).

What Do Moodle And Lifeguards Have In Common? Check Out This Case Study

What Do Moodle And Lifeguards Have In Common? Check Out This Case Study | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
CPR training has changed modalities since I first became certified over a decade ago. A recent study was published in which Moodle was used to host a CPR training. The Brazilian study: “Using educational technology for CPR training: The development of an educational distance program through the Moodle platform” was conducted by Moreira, Santos, Garbe, Carmagnani, Salvador, & Carvalho and appeared in the November 2015 publication of the journal Resuscitation. Researchers designed a remote, self-paced training with materials which were “composed of multimedia features such as text, illustrations, animations, interactive activities and videos.”

Over 1000 people participated in the study, and researchers concluded “It is possible that the use of this technology for training professionals can be a useful strategy to be applied in large hospitals…this technology enables constant access to content, which may result in improved care for victims of cardiac arrest.”

Curiosity pulled my browser to RedCross.org. A quick peek at their offerings, and I found many classes (First Aid/CPR/AED) are currently presented as hybrid courses, involving both online and in-person segments. Perhaps the Brazilian study and Red Cross’s offerings are indicative of a new trend – medical training in the online format.

Instructional Design basics for eLearning development

Instructional Design basics for eLearning development | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
If you’re a newcomer to the field of e-learning or instructional design (ID), you might feel overwhelmed by the amount of information available online regarding the various ID models and all the different learning theories. Where to start?

First, it’s a good idea to understand exactly what instructional design is. In simple terms, it’s the practice of making learning experiences effective, interesting, and engaging for a learner. Anyone can create an e-learning project, but a skilled instructional designer will build e-learning that meets the learning objectives and needs of the audience.

You’ll be happy to know that there are some basic guiding principles of ID that can provide a good starting point for your first e-learning project, and can help you make your training more meaningful for your learners. In fact, even if you’re an experienced pro, you can apply these instructional design basics to tighten up your course.
