Best Practices: Lowering the learning curve for new Moodle users. | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
Moodle is the most widely-used Learning Management System in the world. With more than 63 million users and 70 thousand registered sites in over 200 countries, Moodle gains hundreds of users every day, and many of them are completely new to online learning.

In today’s post, I want to call attention to a few proactive measures that instructors can do to lower the learning curve for new users. The following best practices highlight proactive measures that help students become comfortable with Moodle faster while reducing the number of questions they may have along the way.

The man behind Moodle: A leader of online learning

The man behind Moodle: A leader of online learning | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

Online education pioneer Dr Martin Dougiamas is best known for a noble act: his rejection of a $20-million offer for his open-source education platform which he wanted to keep freely available.

Dougiamas, 47, who runs the learning management system Moodle, which is used by the UN and Google, downplays his sacrifice. "It just happens to be a little thing that seems to capture people's attention," he says.

On whether he regrets shunning the money, he says: "No, absolutely not." Had he taken the cash, Moodle would have been destroyed – taken out of the equation, he says.

"So, Moodle – it's my life's work. It's what I'm passionate about," he says, describing education as "super-important".

His enterprise operates in a spirit of iteration rather than disruption. "Sometimes it's about refining what you've got – making it solid and making it really work," he says, adding that he is still tweaking the initial ideas for Moodle that date back 15 years, because the basics remain the same.

"In education you're dealing with human brains, and human brains don't change a lot – we still learn the same way as we have for thousands of years," he says.

How To Become A Moodle Forums Black Belt Moderator

How To Become A Moodle Forums Black Belt Moderator | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
Online forums, in all their different iterations, are a hotbed of activity across the internet. From social media and comments sections, to image boards, to more specialized and exclusive venues, forums carry the weight of our minds. The simplicity of use makes it also a perfect target for not so constructive participation, or downright antisocial behavior. Courtesy of the Convergence blog by the library of UC San Francisco, we share some ideas on how to promote best practices and keep disruption at bay to ensure meaningful forum interactions.
Pay attention to the type

Moodle features at least four types of forums: Standard, or the classic take; Single discussion where students can only reply to threads started by teachers; Blog type where the starting post looks like an article with a comments section underneath; or Q&A. Each type affect the kinds of contributions you’ll get from students, so choose carefully.

IT’S RIPENING: A Moodle 3.3 Development Update

IT’S RIPENING: A Moodle 3.3 Development Update | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

The Quality Assurance site of Moodle at qa.moodle.net, where everyone can check out and test, is already labeled as a “Moodle 3.3 site”. At this point, the importance of this label is more symbolic than practical, but considering its scheduled launch by May, a lot of development is expected during the coming weeks.

The answers about what Moodle 3.3 will and will not bring is not straightforward. While some issues, mainly involving the new “Boost” theme, delayed Moodle 3.2 one month until December, the next launch has arguably less complex new features. Moodle 3.2 was an exception in the Moodle roadmap decision to switch to a time-based rather than a feature-based release schedule since Moodle 2. Furthermore, an official Moodle update on LinkedIn mentions that the upcoming “Learn Moodle” MOOC, scheduled for June, will be based in Moodle 3.3.
