BREAKING: Free Hosting for Educators, Introducing MoodleCloud

BREAKING: Free Hosting for Educators, Introducing MoodleCloud | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

In a surprising announcement this morning at the Australia Moot, founder Martin Dougiamas announced the launch of MoodleCloud, free Moodle classroom hosting for educators worldwide.

The service will provide educators around the globe the ability to sign up, create courses, and host their classes online for free all on a current Moodle version without needing their local IT staff or administrators to setup a site or fees for hosting.

The official free course hosting launch is a welcome service for Moodlers who for years have used a slew of “freemium” Moodle hosting sites which have suddenly pivoted, languished versions, or slowly become defunct due to latency or lack of a sustainable business model (see a list here).

While the site is not designed for running a MOOC or larger course (users are limited at 50) it does come with free access to BigBlueButton web conferencing for up to 6 users at a time, potentially a great resource for online tutoring sessions and live instruction.

The service will be supported through “minimal advertising”.

Moodle 2.9.1, 2.8.7 and 2.7.9 are now available | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

Moodle 2.9.1, 2.8.7 and 2.7.9 are now available via the usual open download channels: https://download.moodle.org or Git.

In addition to a number of bug fixes and small improvements, security vulnerabilities have been discovered and fixed.  We highly recommend that you upgrade your sites as soon as possible. Upgrading should be very straightforward. As per our usual policy, admins of all registered Moodle sites will be notified of security issue details directly via email and we'll publish details more widely in a week.

Can the Book module be "open" and other enhancements: What would you …

Since 2012 the course EDC3100, ICT and Pedagogy at the University of Southern Queensland has been taken by over 1500 pre-service teachers learning how they can use digital technologies to enhance their own teaching. In that time, the course has evolved from a fairly traditional “textbook, lecture, and 2 tutes” type of online course into an online course reliant on Open Educational Resources (OERs) and individual student blogs. Core to that evolution has been the Moodle book module. Each week’s “learning path” consists of a range of activities and resources with the Book module providing the scaffolding. In the most recent offering, the course included at least 73 Moodle books with 670 chapters. The success of this approach is evident in student evaluations of the course, with comments such as

Learning paths were great. They were informative and interactive

The most helpful aspect of this course was learning paths.
It was clear what to do and how to do it.

MoodleCloud: Free Hosting Services from the makers of Moodle

MoodleCloud: Free Hosting Services from the makers of Moodle | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

Why did we make MoodleCloud? We love educators of all kinds.  We know what they go through, and we want to do everything we can to help empower them to do their job (and their passion, if an education system hasn’t killed it!)That’s why we make open source software, so that a huge community can more easily contribute to improving the software we all share, helping everyone.Of course, not all teachers are IT experts, and not all of them will learn how to install open source software on a server or manage the complexities of upgrades and maintenance.  For them we built the Moodle Partner network as a way to provide services around the world, and this has been quite successful, with tens of thousands of Moodlers being helped by Moodle Partners. We’ve heard though that there are many of our users with smaller needs and low or zero budgets for whom full paid hosting is not an option.   MoodleCloud is our solution to this problem.
