To Master Big Data, Start Small: A Moodle Learning Analytics Talk

To Master Big Data, Start Small: A Moodle Learning Analytics Talk | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
Peter Dobinson is a Solutions Architect for Moodle Partner Leo Learning in the UK. Reaching a local audience, he spoke at length about their in-house approach to analytics as they inform a learning practice. A post on moodle.com provides excerpts of Dobinson’s talk at the latest MoodleMoot UK & Ireland 2017.

Before the audience got carried away with the hype of yet another buzzword, Dobinson made sure the audience understood what the complete proposition of analytics entails. Analytics describes a process and the tools used to systematically collect, analyze, and report data for a defined goal (or a series of goals). In Moodle’s case, the goals are related to optimizing learning outcomes. This framework not only helps bring everyone to a common understanding about what analytics are and are not, but it allows us frame it in terms of a final product, which has advantages in many dimensions, such as institutional innovation or professionalization.

Moodle plugins: Facetoface

Moodle plugins: Facetoface | elearning stuff | Scoop.it
Face-to-face activities are used to keep track of in-person (e.g. classroom) trainings which require advance booking. Each activity is offered in one or more identical sessions. These sessions can be given over multiple days. Reminder messages are sent to users and their managers a few days before the session is scheduled to start. Confirmation messages are sent when users sign-up for a session or cancel. This module may be of interest to administrators looking for a way to provide event management support for blended learning environments.

This Plugins Lets You Run Active Time Contests In Moodle

This Plugins Lets You Run Active Time Contests In Moodle | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

The Course Dedication plugin, created by Aday Talavera, gives you an estimate of the time each student has been active in Moodle.

It works by keeping track of student navigation throughout a session. When the plugin is active, it tracks every click made by students. When a logged in users clicks any link in Moodle within a given time, the session starts. The session ends when a specified amount of time passes after the last click. With these settings, the plugin can track the number of sessions the student is studying in Moodle and the duration of each session. By keeping track of user activity independently from logins and logouts, it encourages students to navigate within the site to rank high in Moodle activity.

Writing multiple choice questions

Writing multiple choice questions | elearning stuff | Scoop.it

"Content covered in an instructional setting is not (necessarily) content learned, so the evaluation is a measure of (1) how well the instruction supports learning, and (2) how well students recall, apply, implement what was learned. Multiple choice, or multiple answer questions can be suited to assessing knowledge, comprehension, analysis, but on the other hand are not useful for assessing physical skill/ability or environment-level decision making that requires physical context.

"The following provides a basic overview for writing multiple choice questions."

The NGDLE's Relevance to Community and Technical Colleges

Key Takeaways

Today, the typical learning management system serves as little more than a virtual resource storage site, facilitating access to material rather than inspiring and enhancing the actual learning process.

In contrast, the Next Generation Digital Learning Environment focuses on personalization, tool integration, and content exchange, thereby serving as a launch pad for new learning experiences.
Because it is standards-based, NGDLE eliminates interoperability problems that often plague higher education institutions.

One such institution is the Kentucky Community and Technical College System; its encouragement of faculty innovation has resulted in successful tool use and teaching approaches — as well as a mash-up of tools that is straining the limits of its existing LMS.

For learning and development to stay relevant, training professionals need to adopt a mobile mindset. However, this isn’t just a new technology “fix.” It’s an entire change of attitude about how content is designed and delivered. Mobile devices, used properly, can improve training throughout your organization. This new attitude will take some planning, preparation, and persuasion to design training that maximizes the user experience.
