Kids can't use computers... and this is why it should worry you - Coding 2 Learn | elearning_moodle_schools | Scoop.it

Richard Jones's insight:

This is a long rant that will appeal mostly to techies and computer teachers.  However, it seems to me to be worth a read.

A teacher brings me her school laptop. ‘Bloody thing won’t connect to the internet.’ she says angrily, as if it were my fault. ‘I had tonnes of work to do last night, but I couldn’t get on-line at all. My husband even tried and he couldn’t figure it out and he’s excellent with computers.’ I take the offending laptop from out of her hands, toggle the wireless switch that resides on the side, and hand it back to her. Neither her nor her husband can use computers.

Richard Jones's curator insight, August 19, 2013 4:24 PM

Within this website is a pdf on Evolutionary Changes of Schooling which is quite interesting, http://schoolevolutionarystages.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Evolutionary-Stages-of-Schooling4.pdf. Sadly no references provided.

As the preamble says, there is a great deal of variability in individual schools (which you would expect).  I wonder which you would consider the "key" indicators, if any.

Learning Without Frontiers - Highlights from Day 2
Richard Jones's insight:

Technology-in-education guru Professor Stephen Heppell believes that if young people are allowed to take the lead in learning they can do extraordinary things. With the trend of young people increasingly making use of their own devices in schools, we are now in a 'bring a browser' sort of world which opens up new opportunities as well as challenges.

Richard Jones's insight:

"To begin unpacking the relationship between badges and motivation, they conducted a study using badges within an intelligent-tutor system for teaching applied mathematics to middle-school students. Their findings indicate that badge earning could be driven by learner motivations and that systems with badges could have a positive effect on critical learner motivations. However, badge acquisition patterns were different across learners with different levels of prior knowledge. Different badge types also affected different learners motivation."

Food for thought on badge implementation.

Technology Is Changing How Students Learn, Teachers Say

Technology Is Changing How Students Learn, Teachers Say | elearning_moodle_schools | Scoop.it
There is a widespread belief among teachers that digital technology is hampering students’ attention spans and ability to persevere, according to two surveys.
Richard Jones's insight:

Sad that this is subjective when the more objective studies point in a different direction.  Is it just me or did the teachers interviewed already have resistance built-in.

The heavy technology use, Dr. Christakis said, “makes reality by comparison uninteresting.”<

Building Classroom Community Amongst the Machines

Building Classroom Community Amongst the Machines | elearning_moodle_schools | Scoop.it

"There’s no denying that most of us are engrossed daily with technology. The attachment is evident in just about every public place. Mobile devices, for many of us, have become our closest friend."

Richard Jones's insight:

Reminiscent of the work Jill Margerison is doing at The Southport School, getting students to engage with physical representations of their online contributions.

Some things done (but not all) in the eLearning space are possible physically and vice versa.  This adds depth and a chance to further develop Higher Order thinking.

Dico Krommenhoek's curator insight, June 20, 2013 3:19 AM
