Here's How They'll Piece Together What Happened to Flight MH370 | Autopia | Wired.com | Technology Enhanced Learning in Aviation | Scoop.it
As the search for MH370 enters its third week, authorities get their most tantalizing clue yet with photos showing a possible debris field. Finding wreckage would allow them to begin piecing together, literally and figuratively, just what happened.
The Digital Aviator's insight:

We may never know what eventually happened on board the day this aircraft was illegally seized. Blaming the pilots may be an assumption too far, 'might it be possible that they died rather than hand their aircraft over to people unknown?  I am sure almost no effort will be spared to get to the bottom of this, but it will almost certainly involve some very serious deep water recovery...

Will Boeing 747 Fly Steady In The Face Of Current Headwinds?

Will Boeing 747 Fly Steady In The Face Of Current Headwinds? | Technology Enhanced Learning in Aviation | Scoop.it

The world's largest jet maker, Boeing (BA), may very soon see the end of the era of its iconic jumbo jet, the 747. Continuous weakness in demand in the cargo market and changes in requirements for large commercial jets are having a bearing on the Chicago-headquartered aerospace major's wide-body commercial jet offering.

The plane maker has seen no orders for its 747-8 jet so far this year. The 467-seater capacity plane is facing difficulty in getting orders. However, the 747-8F version managed to receive order for just one aircraft. Fears linger that if the market for such jets continues to remain as dull, the 747 series jet would fade away soon. Presently, Boeing's order books show a firm backlog of 51 747-8s. The 747 has received total orders for 120 since it was first unveiled, of which 69 have been delivered.

Via Pol Bacquet
The Digital Aviator's insight:

Boeing knew what it was doing when it invested in the Big Twin route over the three or four engined options. These configurations may have a future, but it will require a step-change in engine and airframe design to provide the resulting performance bonuses to fire the market and airline's imagination. The 747-8 didn't quite bridge this gap.

Flight Safety Compromised | European Cockpit Association (ECA) | Technology Enhanced Learning in Aviation | Scoop.it
“Today the European Parliament (EP) voted for a Regulation that is not to the benefit of the flying public in Europe,” says Nico Voorbach, ECA President, after the adoption of the new EU Flight Time rules by the EU Parliament this afternoon. “With this approval the EP took a step away from a ‘precautionary’ approach, ignored scientific expert advice and put passenger safety at risk.” Pilots and cabin crew from across Europe have repeatedly highlighted the safety loopholes of the regulation proposed by the EU Commission: excessively long night flights of up to 12hrs30 – while scientists have set the safe limit at 10 hours – and a combination of standby and flight duty, which could lead to pilots landing aircraft after having been awake for more than 22 hours.
