edutopia: Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning

edutopia: Personalized PBL: Student-Designed Learning | eLearning | Scoop.it
Project-based learning may be the best vehicle for personalized learning as teachers move beyond "course-based" approaches and open the way for student-designed curriculum.

Dennis T OConnor's curator insight, July 16, 2014 7:08 PM

Author Andrew Miller poses a what if question that resonates with me:

Moving Past "Course-Based" PBL

Due to the antiquated restraints of the education system, most educators are forced to implement PBL in a "course-based" manner. This means that the project occurs within the traditional discipline structures, where there may be integration, but learning is framed within grades and competencies. In addition, start and stop times, driven by the Carnegie unit, force teachers to start and stop a project for all of their students around the same time. What if PBL wasn't held to antiquated rules of time, space, and discipline constructs? In that ideal situation, students could be engaged in personalized projects.

Thinking About The R in SAMR - Edudemic

Thinking About The R in SAMR - Edudemic | eLearning | Scoop.it

"The end of the school year is a time for reflection. What did we do well? What do we need to improve upon? These are the typical questions that both individuals and school districts ask at the end of the spring. However, there is another important question that I struggle to answer as well. This is the question about how we have changed? What have we done differently this year to push our thinking and the thinking of our students? To be more specific, I find myself dwelling on the Rin Dr. Ruben Puentedura’s SAMR model, a model designed to help educators integrate technology into teaching and learning."

10 Teacher Resources For Lesson Planning Templates & Tools - TeachThought

10 Teacher Resources For Lesson Planning Templates & Tools - TeachThought | eLearning | Scoop.it

"Lesson plans can play a vital role in simplifying a teacher’s job, and also can ensure that classes are conducted in a seamless and efficient manner. A good lesson plan can be a great way for teachers to organize activities, highlight areas of focus, experiment with different ideas, and set goals for student achievement. With effective lesson planning, teachers can have a solid diagram to follow in order to stay organized and ensure student success.

However, a quality lesson requires time, commitment, and creativity to create. Unfortunately, time is not a luxury that teachers possess; as they already have enough on their plate in addition to the time and focus needed to produce a customized lesson design."

Guillaume, I got more benefit from your comments on this SlideShare presentation than from the presentation itself. Marketo has done a nice job of pulling together content that is eminently shareable, but without a voice over or detailed presentation notes, it's kind of like driving through a beautiful city in the back of a car, and never being able to get out and experience its true personality. IMHO. I'm sure the Virtual Event was far more enlightening.

Some 600 educators spent the past week thinking hard about project design during the PBL World conference in Napa, Calif., sponsored by Buck Institute for Education. Getting peer feedback early is a key strategy for good project design. That meant conference participants were sharing their project ideas and driving questions at the formative stage, then revising them in response to feedback (just as students improve their work during PBL).

Here's a sampling of driving questions at the rough draft stage, along with suggestions about PBL planning to fire up your thinking:

The Teacher's Guide To Choosing The Best Digital Content - Edudemic

"A blended learning environment means you’re mixing technology with standard teaching practices in order to enhance education. In other words, you’re mixing a little bit of tech with a little bit of in-classroom learning and you’re getting something better than the sum of its parts. Blended learning is becoming the biggest trend in education technology lately as teachers (hey that’s you!) realize technology isn’t the magical unicorn of education. It’s not enough to simply throw an iPad into a student’s hands and walk away."
