The Early Literacy Shift: New Words, New Media, New Friends

The Early Literacy Shift: New Words, New Media, New Friends | elearning and Community Learning and Development | Scoop.it

And when I had to explain why iPod didn’t start with an upper case letter the way proper nouns usually did, well, I decided all of the rules were up for grabs. The changes I have mentioned are rather superficial, but they are indicators of a large shift that has been taking place in the way that I teach literacy.

Having students use technology in many different ways is a great idea. My children enjoy being able to video chat and skype with their daddy because he is overseas, and they study different words or lessons that they are going over to not only keep him involved but also so they can have the experience of having their daddy help them with school work as well.

Writefull | A new way of writing with confidence

Writefull | A new way of writing with confidence | elearning and Community Learning and Development | Scoop.it

We all use Google to check if our writing is correct. We enter different phrases until we find the one that gives us most results – and this is the one we use in our own text. A smart approach, but not without its annoyances: revisiting the Google webpage breaks the flow of our writing, and its results often contain grammatical errors.

An interesting twist on varying your writing. But the comment was correct - there is a bit of a disruption to the writing process and they students need to be reminded that google is not without spelling mistakes!

Charlie Dare's curator insight, April 2, 3:56 AM
Writing a story line or script its usefull ~This looks like an interesting software tool which you can download and use to check your writing against the texts included in thousands of Google books. It can even detect context from the text you are writing and compare it to similar contexts. Interesting stuff!
Ulrike Grabe's curator insight, April 24, 5:36 AM

The application helps to check your writing (in English) not only regarding spelling and grammer but adds tools to check examples of the use of a certain phrase, context and synonyms, too.

8 Online Games for Inspiring Students

8 Online Games for Inspiring Students | elearning and Community Learning and Development | Scoop.it

For many teachers, online games are the scourge of the classroom – a drain on students’ attention, time and potential. Any educator who has ever tried to teach a lesson using online resources or taken a class in the computer lab has probably experienced the frustration of finding a student on a gaming site instead of sticking to the intended lesson plan. But online games don’t always have to be a distraction

Connected Learning: Harnessing the Information Age to Make Learning More Powerful | elearning and Community Learning and Development | Scoop.it

This report introduces connected learning, a promising educational approach that uses digital media to engage students’ interests and instill deeper learning skills, such as communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Redefining the Writing Process with iPads

Redefining the Writing Process with iPads | elearning and Community Learning and Development | Scoop.it

With iPads, once we begin thinking beyond the confines of a page, anything is possible. Consider the video below created several years ago by two of my students. First they wrote plot summaries. Then they wrote character sketches. From there, they crafted paragraphs about theme, tying the visual and auditory elements of their videos back to the books. Finally, they created storyboards and bibliographies before producing and publishing their final product.

The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing

The Impact of Digital Tools on Student Writing | elearning and Community Learning and Development | Scoop.it

These teachers see the internet and digital technologies such as social networking sites, cell phones and texting, generally facilitating teens’ personal expression and creativity, broadening the audience for their written material, and encouraging teens to write more often in more formats than may have been the case in prior generations.  At the same time, they describe the unique challenges of teaching writing in the digital age, including the “creep” of informal style into formal writing assignments and the need to better educate students about issues such as plagiarism and fair use.

Interesting article highlighting confusion between formal and informal writing when using digital tools. On a positive note, students benefit from being able to see each others' work and collaborate online.

Sarah Peterson's comment, October 1, 2013 6:27 AM
This article was very fascinating. It talked about the impact of technology on student writing. I thought this was interesting because there are so many ways now that students can write on the computer. For example our school now has 1:1 laptops so we use technology more often now. I thought it was interesting how they also talked about how the technology can create some bad writing habits though. This article was great and I would encourage students and teachers to read it.
