10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns

10 Reasons Why We Need Research Literacy, Not Scare Columns | eLearning | Scoop.it

The children and media research community has been buzzing with frustration at the viral circulation of Cris Rowan's Huffington Post column, "10 Reasons Why Handheld Devices Should Be Banned for Children Under the Age of 12." The piece pretty well defines "hack-ademic" writing, in which an author throws lots of learned-sounding terms and citations at a lay reader, while obscuring misinterpretations and fuzzy logic. Here are 10 reasons why Rowan's column is flawed.

Creating cognitive disequilibrium in your students by pointing out gaps in their knowledge through focused questioning sounds like a good strategy to me! The article suggests this will spur them to learn more, that is get to a state of equilibrium.

CTD Institute's curator insight, January 23, 3:03 PM

One of the best insights for eLearning designers: Promote desequilibrium- disruption is actually goo for the brain:)

A higher-order thinker is a critical thinker. What are the attributes of a critical thinker? In The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Richard Paul and Linda Elder describe a well-cultivated critical thinker as someone who:
raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.

tom cockburn's curator insight, December 24, 2014 6:17 AM

Motivation and cooperative learning are good uses problems arise for people in the evaluation and assessment and that compromises the acceptance of such by potential employers etc. The difficulty is in discerning the difference between collaborative or shared learning as opposed to simple collusion in getting answers which may not entail much,if any learning, other than how to cheat and thus disadvantage genuine learners who have made an effort. Thus making use of others' research to inform your own projects is not the same as claiming others' work as your own...and that is a big selling point for systems like Turnitin and others.

Bonnie Bracey Sutton's curator insight, January 8, 9:52 PM
Many teachers of today are not prepared as the choices are often made at an administrate or IT level without proper vetting of teacher involvement.

Prompts to Help Students Reflect on How They Approach Learning

Prompts to Help Students Reflect on How They Approach Learning | eLearning | Scoop.it
One of the best gifts teachers can give students are the experiences that open their eyes to themselves as learners. Most students don’t think much about how they learn. Mine used to struggle to write a paragraph describing the study approaches they planned to use in my communication courses. However, to be fair, I’m not sure I had a lot of insights about my learning when I was a student. Did you?
