5 steps for creating a custom makerspace | eSchool News | eSchool News

5 steps for creating a custom makerspace | eSchool News | eSchool News | eLearning, Blended Learning and Mobile Learning | Scoop.it

I believe that every child has the right to invent, tinker, create, innovate, make, and do. The maker movement has created opportunities for all educators to give students authentic learning opportunities that go beyond the typical classroom experiences and to rethink traditional learning environments to include those that nurture the kinds of creativity and innovation that will benefit our students both in school and beyond. We know children learn by exploring and playing and doing and making and that these kinds of things lead to deeper engagement. The maker movement embodies opportunities for experimentation and innovation to occur across all grade levels and all content areas.

Physical makerspaces have allowed us the opportunity to pull some of this excitement of the maker movement into our schools. Makerspaces can help set the stage for meaningful student learning, as well as help cultivate a culture of innovation within a school. My makerspace inspires innovation, passion, and personal motivation and interests, and has encouraged students to pursue STEM subjects and careers.

Why not let students choose what works best for them – student voice. To me,  letting students choose what tools they use and how they organize shows a strength based approach to student learning. What benefit is there in forcing students to function in a way that may not be self directed and self optimized?

NMC Horizon Report > 2015 K-12 Edition #byod #makered #makerspaces

NMC Horizon Report > 2015 K-12 Edition #byod #makered #makerspaces | eLearning, Blended Learning and Mobile Learning | Scoop.it
What is on the five-year horizon for K-12 schools worldwide? Which trends and technologies will drive educational change? What are the challenges that we consider as solvable or difficult to overcome, and how can we strategize effective solutions? These questions and similar inquiries regarding technology adoption and transforming teaching and learning steered the collaborative research and discussions of a body of 56 experts to produce the NMC Horizon Report > 2015 K-12 Edition, in partnership with the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN). The NMC also gratefully acknowledges ISTE as a dissemination partner. The three key sections of this report — key trends, significant challenges, and important developments in educational technology — constitute a reference and straightforward technology planning guide for educators, school leaders, administrators, policymakers, and technologists. It is our hope that this research will help to inform the choices that institutions are making about technology to improve, support, or extend teaching, learning, and creative inquiry in K-12 education across the globe. Exploring Students' E-Textbook Practices in Higher Education

Exploring Students' E-Textbook Practices in Higher Education | eLearning, Blended Learning and Mobile Learning | Scoop.it

Nicole Reid's curator insight, July 16, 7:45 PM

This article shows how technology is improving education! I personally have e-textbooks for my Master's program and the nice thing I enjoy about e-textbooks is that I can search and find what I am looking for without having to try to look through a 200 page book and find where I highlighted about a topic. I can highlight and write notes in adobe digital education which is what I use to read my e-textbook. You can also highlight and stick notes PDF files via the toolbar task Diigo. No longer do I have to carry around a 20lb textbook. Now I can access my notes and readings from almost anywhere.

Ben Bempong's curator insight, July 20, 6:55 PM

I hope that this will show to schools and parents that with being in the future times, everything is switching the electronic and computer base usage.  E textbooks are much convenient for students to use, and are much more manageable to keep ahold to than physical textbooks.  The only issue is getting to the place where all our students own a computer, laptop, ipad, etc (When talking k-12 students)..  Students in low income areas (K-12 students) still struggle with getting their students electronic sources to use, but E-Textbooks are the now and the future.

GHO4EDU is a collection of GHO that anyone can replicate. The idea is to demonstrate what others have already successfully done, then incorporate the best parts into your own GHO.

Of particular interest to faculty is the professional development GHO, where you can envision taking HR mandatory training up a notch! Further, connecting peer to peer across the spectrum of your specific discipline is a great way to initiate and then foster collaboration and professional networking.

Well worth the read!
