Fabulous flow chart of alternative search engines for research. I admit, I use Google as my go to engine out of habit. This has changed my mind and my way of doing research. Check it out!

The Most Basic Things eLearning Professionals Need to Know About Learning

The Most Basic Things eLearning Professionals Need to Know About Learning | The e-Learning Designer | Scoop.it

"Understanding how the mind processes information and stores it is vital to educators, instructional designers and eLearning professionals. Simply stated, if you don’t know how the mind works, you have no way of knowing how to design material that will ensure success for your students. Information processing theory is a subject that has been studied, discussed and debated so much that a lot of the information available conflicts. However, there are a few basic principles that are generally agreed upon."

The Power of Storytelling in eLearning

The Power of Storytelling in eLearning | The e-Learning Designer | Scoop.it

"“What would happen if we took a deep breath, stepped away from the storyboard, and crafted a fascinating narrative to guide our learners? One that our learners felt and experienced on an emotional level; that elicited a response to go, or change, or do; and above all, that resulted in the meaningful change we’re really seeking—now that’s a powerful tale!”"

Making The Shift To Mobile-First Teaching

Making The Shift To Mobile-First Teaching | The e-Learning Designer | Scoop.it

"When smartphones first became popular, the struggle was to shrink Internet Explorer to the size of a playing card. The internet browser was the de facto app installed on every computer—it allowed you to browse the web. For many, the web browser is a computer. (See Google Chromebooks.)

It quickly became clear that squeezing desktop actions on handheld technology was backwards. Mobile-first thinking changed things. Facebook became mobile-first—which meant that it’s designed to not just be accessed on your phone, but work better on your phone. Websites are often now responsive, scaling to the size of your screen."

eLearning - Are We Missing The Point?

eLearning - Are We Missing The Point? | The e-Learning Designer | Scoop.it

"I want to start this off by asking one simple question…does eLearning really work? Unfortunately though there is no simple way to answer that question.

There are many arguments both for and against eLearning, but the stark reality is, that if you are pushed for an answer, when you look at the facts, the answer is a resounding “NO”…but it so easily could be a “Yes.”

Thinking Horizontally and Vertically About Blended Learning

Thinking Horizontally and Vertically About Blended Learning | The e-Learning Designer | Scoop.it

"Blended learning has gone from being an interesting new hybrid of traditional and online courses to being an expected part of American education. When the Sloan Consortium last studied blended learning in 2007, it found “a lot of room for growth” in the market for blended courses. It found “consumer preference for online and blended delivery far exceeds reported experience,” indicating that demand was ahead of supply at that point."

Why Move eLearning from Flash to HTML5?

Why Move eLearning from Flash to HTML5? | The e-Learning Designer | Scoop.it

"In 2009, Steve Jobs famously declared Flash to be buggy and resource hungry and the whole world moved to HTML5. He did elaborate his thoughts in this article where he said “new open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and on PCs too)”. In that last bit ‘and on PCs too’ he could clearly see the upcoming consumerisation of IT and its effects on enterprise IT."

Online Learning Must Be Collaborative and Social

Carla Kessler's curator insight, November 23, 1:55 PM

Although this is about higher level coursework than middle school, the social and collaborative importance of online learning is even more paramount at the middle grade level. When you choose a computer-based curriculum, look for ways that it allows students to work together or interact with their knowledge.

Audrey's curator insight, November 27, 11:29 AM

This means that  learning online will open up the skype network.  People will  see each other and exchange views in real time. Learning materials can be easily downloaded.  If people from all parts of the country and world are able interact surely this will lead to less prejudice and stereotyping and an understanding of each other as human beings.
