Living Earth Simulator will simulate the entire world | #Collective #Intelligence | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

"Described as a “knowledge collider,” and now with a pledge of one billion euros from the European Union, the Living Earth Simulator is a new big data and supercomputing project that will attempt to uncover the underlying sociological and psychological laws that underpin human civilization. In the same way that CERN’s Large Hadron Collider smashes together protons to see what happens, the Living Earth Simulator (LES) will gather knowledge from a Planetary Nervous System (PNS — yes, really) to try to predict societal fluctuations such as political unrest, economic bubbles, disease epidemics, and so on."

Wake Up! It's Time for an Online Learning Reality Check

Wake Up! It's Time for an Online Learning Reality Check | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

This month, I attended the 17th Annual Sloan-C Conference for Online Learning in Orlando, Florida (U.S.), and, as I reflect on my experience, I am both excited and energized about the future landscape of higher education -- but I'm also concerned...While there’s no way to predict the future, trends and data from the past are our most reliable guides. Each year, Sloan-C shares an exceptional report, produced by the Babson Research Group, that provides a snapshot of online learning enrollments and leadership perspectives in the United States. This is an invaluable resource to any college leader, faculty, staff, or student anywhere in the world — as we are all in this paradigm shift together. The report can be used as an opportunity to take the pulse of online trends, engage in dialogue at your local campus about how to best plan for the future, or as a model for developing a similar survey within your region or system.

The Digital Revolution and Higher Education | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project

As online college courses have become increasingly prevalent, the general public and college presidents offer different assessments of their educational value, according to a new Pew Research Center report. Just three-in-ten American adults (29%) say a course taken online provides an equal educational value to one taken in a classroom. By contrast, about half of college presidents (51%) say online courses provide the same value.

Five Big Changes to the Future of Teacher Education | MindShift

Five Big Changes to the Future of Teacher Education | MindShift | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

In the book Teaching 2030 by Barnett Berry and 12 classroom experts, the authors pinpoint specific skills educators will need to teach in the schools of tomorrow. They say teachers must be prepared to find and adapt new technologies to engage the digital generation, as well as work across traditional subject areas using project learning. They must be able to use data and evidence to inform their practice and know how to work in both virtual learning environments and brick-and-mortar schools. And they’ll need to collaborate with community-based organizations and work in schools that provide all kinds of other services for students and their families.

Lee Rainie, Director of Pew Internet and American Life Project, keynote address to SETDA, Nov. 2011

According the Pew Research Center, the combination of widespread access to broadband Internet connectivity, the popularity of social networking, and the near ubiquity of mobile computing is producing a fundamentally new kind of learner, one that is self-directed, better equipped to capture information, more reliant on feedback from peers, more inclined to collaborate, and more oriented toward being their own "nodes of production."
