Users without Google’s  G Suite for Education accounts can now access Google Classroom from a personal Google account. Classroom also offers more administrator controls that allow G Suite users with domains outside of their own to join.

The company said in a blog post announcement that teachers and students will now be able to use their personal accounts to teach or attend classes and manage assignments. Sometime over the coming weeks, Google will give personal accounts the ability to create their own classes as well. For now, administrators will notice that Classroom has updated settings with new controls that allow them to easily monitor who can join their classes. To add a user from an outside domain, for example, both the administrator and other user need to whitelist the other’s domain in their settings. This feature enables outside guests, like visiting teachers or students, to quickly integrate into their host’s Classroom.

In many cases, there seems to be a tendency to water down expectations when it comes to integrating technology.  

During a recent presentation on digital pedagogy for deeper learning I asked attendees to discuss then share out on TodaysMeet how they were effectively integrating technology in their classroom, school, or district.  There was an emphasis on describing in detail what effective use of technology meant to them.  As the results poured in there were a few consistent responses that stood out. Most attendees flat out stated that they or their schools/districts were not effectively integrating technology. Others confessed that they weren’t sure what effective use constituted.  Many of the remaining responses centered on just a listing of tools that were being used as a measure of effectiveness.

The shortage of digital skills in the current marketplace is unprecedented. It is estimated that over 4.4 million IT jobs will be created around Big Data by 2015; however, only a third of these new jobs will be filled. Martha Lane Fox, the UK’s digital inclusion champion, believes over 16 million people in the UK lack the basic digital skills to fully benefit from the Internet. Even Millenials are a matter of concern. In a survey comprising over 800 middle to upper management executives from over 50 industries, nearly one in five Millenials in the modern workplace are perceived to be lacking in analytical skills.
 
The reasons driving this skills shortage are not hard to identify. The usage of mobile, social and analytical tools is permeating the length and breadth of every function across the organization. Unlike the past, the impact of these digital technologies and tools is felt not just in the IT department. This means that the magnitude of training and re-skilling thatis required is enormous. Moreover, each new technology cycle has brought forth new requirements and these cycles are increasingly getting shorter. Employees must now refresh their skills more frequently if they wish to stay relevant in this rapidly changing digital environment. The head of India R&D Labs of software firm SAP succinctly states: “The shelf life of a software engineer today is no more than that of a cricketer – about 15 years. The 20-year-old guys provide me more value than the 35-year-olds do.
 
Organizations are beginning to recognize the magnitude of the problem. Our own research with the MIT Center for Digital Business has revealed that 77% of companies considered missing digital skills as the key hurdle to their digital transformation. Digital leaders or ‘Digirati’ a are already investing in digital skills and reaping significant benefits in comparison to other companies (see Figure 1). On average, ‘Digirati’ are
26% more profitable than their industry competitors.
 
This skills shortage is creating a ‘war for talent’, where companies have to compete for the best talent with new categories of players. Unlike in the past, the hunt for the best talent is no more limited to localized skills in certain departments. In this case, the talent war is manifest across the entire organization. The important questions are: Do organizations include digital skills as a key component in their workforce plans? Are HR departments equipped and skilled to bring innovative solutions to bridge the digital skills gap? How are Digiratis developing digital skills?

Last week, I spoke with a friend who helps schools launch blended-learning programs about what she sees as the biggest barriers inhibiting program success. Her answers were intriguing. First, she suggested that schools need to ensure that teachers, students, parents, and administrators all have a shared vision for why blended learning would be good for their students before getting into the “what” and “how” of a program. But after developing this shared vision, one of the biggest challenges, she noted, was helping teachers trust their students.

By definition, blended learning gives students more control over the time, place, path, or pace of their learning. But for experienced teachers in a traditional classroom setting, it can be difficult to imagine a class operating successfully when students have a high degree of autonomy. My friend noted that teachers often worry about students surfing the web when they are supposed to be working or not showing up to school at all if their blended-learning program affords them flexible school hours.

While the concepts, recommendations, and examples in the NETP are applicable to higher education and postsecondary learning, they draw extensively from P-12 frameworks and rely heavily on its terminology and promising practices, but are not primarily applicable to the complex context of postsecondary learning or devote specific focus to its promising practices.

As scientific understanding and artificial intelligence leap forward, many professions—such as law, accounting, animation, and medicine—are changing in dramatic ways. Increasingly, these advances allow non-experts and machines to perform tasks that were previously in the sole domain of experts, thus turning expert-quality work into a commodity. With new technologies displacing workers across many fields, what will be the likely impact on the teaching profession? Will machines replace teachers?

Despite the hype and fear, machines are unlikely to replace teachers anytime soon. Rather, they are poised to help overcome several structural barriers that make it difficult to ensure that an effective teacher reaches every student.

School systems face a number of challenges, including teacher shortages, a lack of clear methods for developing high-quality teachers, and teacher burnout and attrition, to name a few. And even the best teachers struggle to address the diverse learning needs of their students or find time to focus on developing students’ deeper learning and noncognitive skills amidst pressures to cover core instruction.

The additional benefit for using tools like these is that you can take what you hear and learn and the next day in class anonymously share some ideas to get the discussion going.

Even if you try to keep things anonymous, you will have the students who immediately fess up and say “yeah that’s mine,” because that’s just what the students do, which is okay because they are willingly sharing what they said.

And if it does come down to a right or wrong kind of question and that student is in fact incorrect, that’s an even better lesson–a better example for the other students in the classroom to show that it’s okay to answer something and to be wrong.

In our innovative classrooms across America, students are using technology in ways that were unheard of just ten short years ago. In a small elementary school in Northwest Baltimore, students use their Makerspace to create 3D printed materials, learn to code and engage in other making activities. In another school in Philadelphia, a student fulfills his senior capstone project requirement by creating a “Smart Beehive” that uses sensors and a camera to track the health of a bee colony.


While there are some schools of education that prepare pre-service teachers to excel in these types of technology-rich environments on their first day of in-service teaching, there is still room for growth in our teacher preparation programs as a whole, particularly as more schools shift towards digital learning.

Research consistently shows that effective teachers are the most important school-level factor influencing student outcomes. It therefore comes as no surprise that many education reform efforts focus on supporting and improving the teaching profession. At the same time, technology-focused initiatives continue to gain momentum in education—as seen through the White House’s ConnectEd Initiative and the more than 3,100 superintendents who have signed the Department of Education’s Future Ready pledge to increase student access to quality digital learning.

In the competition for scarce education dollars, these two advocacy camps sometimes conflict, especially if technology seems to be a play for cutting teacher jobs. But teachers and technology are only at odds when advocates from the respective camps fail to see technology’s critical role in complementing high-quality teaching.

The rapid advancement of technologies and their ubiquitous use in our daily lives have dramatically changed the way knowledge is created and disseminated. As a technology-enhanced pedagogical approach, blended learning – the deliberate combination of online learning with face-to-face classroom-based learning – provides higher education institutions (HEIs) with the opportunities to enhance the quality of teaching and learning. While many of these opportunities have been well-documented in the literature, implementing and scaling up blended learning courses pose enormous challenges for HEIs in the Asia-Pacific region.

To address these challenges, UNESCO Bangkok in partnership with The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) launched a two-year project to build the capacity of HEIs for blended learning. One of the outcomes of the project was this book by a team of blended learning experts and leaders in the region. Blended Learning for Quality Higher Education presents a framework and self-assessment tool developed from a holistic view of building institutional capacity to drive, sustain, and scale up blended learning. It incorporates case studies from experienced HEIs in the region to demonstrate how the framework and its dimensions could be operationalised, and how the gaps identified in the self-assessment exercise could be addressed.
