More good news for the hybrid learning model - eCampus News

More good news for the hybrid learning model - eCampus News | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

New study finds that hybrid learning and traditional instruction adds value to a student’s education.

A new report published in the Higher Education Academy reveals what many in the ed-tech community have long suspected: incorporating technology in the classroom along with traditional teaching practices improves student learning.

Technology, for example, can enhance the way students perform in certain subjects by using applications such as adaptive tests which determines question difficulty based on previous answers, and innovations in education including multimedia and digital projects can help reduce cheating.

The real challenge for higher ed leaders is keeping up with the rapidly changing innovations in technology and education, while finding innovative ways to incorporate new learning methods in curricula.

Online Learning

Online Learning | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Introduction

Technology has opened up a world of opportunities for online learning.[i] Many students now keep track of their coursework, read and watch educational content, and submit assignments through their schools’ online learning management systems (LMS). In addition, students have access to a broader range of classes and content areas through virtual classrooms and online distance learning. Outside the school setting, children informally learn from educational video games and online content, while people of all ages master new subjects in free massive open online courses (MOOCs).

Some forms of online learning translate the traditional class structure into the digital realm, while others open up new methods for communication among educators and students. In synchronous learning, an educator and their students gather online at the same time in a virtual classroom. Asynchronous learning does not require that students and instructors be online at the same time, opening up the possibility of self-paced and personalized learning tailored to individual students. Blended learning combines face-to-face instruction in a physical classroom with online learning activities.
Like the technologies that enable online learning, research on the topic is still fairly new, particularly when it comes to evaluating the outcomes of online learning. The section below highlights key findings from the emerging research on online learning.

'I Love My Label': Resisting the Pre-Packaged Sound in Ed-Tech

'I Love My Label': Resisting the Pre-Packaged Sound in Ed-Tech | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
“Indie ed-tech” posits a different narrative than one where venture-funded MOOCs are, as Clay Shirky put it, the “lightning strike on a rotten tree.” Indie ed-tech offers a narrative that draws on a history of how new technologies shaped indie music in particular. This history might suggest something about what new technologies can and do offer teaching, learning, and research – one that isn’t about doom and disruption (unless we’re talking doom and disruption for those corporate ed-tech executives who want to control the learning playlist).

Cloud-based virtual labs could become key for universities looking to save money and improve student learning.
In an innovative move, faculty from colleges and universities are working with a tech company to create fully mobile, real-world, cloud-based virtual labs.

Why? Because as Virginia-based IT solutions provider Aeronomy explains, harnessing cloud infrastructure to help alleviate strained funding is critical for one of STEM’s most invaluable resources: the lab.

iNACOL Blended Learning Teacher Competency Framework - iNACOL | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

In recent years there has been a dramatic rise in interest and early adoption of blended learning to improve the educational experiences of students. A great amount of work has been done to codify approaches, with tools and resources emphasizing the structural components of new models, such as the configuration of physical learning space, use of time, distribution of staff, and applications of technology. While there is widespread recognition that great in person teaching remains essential within these structures, there has been less exploration of the human factors and effective practices that make them successful.

US professors aren’t getting any more accepting of online learning—but students definitely are

US professors aren’t getting any more accepting of online learning—but students definitely are | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Online education comes with plenty of drawbacks. The cons tend to amplify when schools try to integrate e-learning into a broader bricks-and-mortar college experience: Students are said to get bored, learn less, or absorb only a portion of the intellectual atmosphere they’d find in physical classrooms.

Despite all that, online learning as part of university programs—also known as distance learning—has managed to wrangle more than a decade of continuous growth, according to an annual update from the Babson Research Group, which has tracked online education in the US since 2002. That’s even as higher education enrollment in the country in general is dropping.

The LMS In The Age of Learning Engagement - Grovo

The LMS In The Age of Learning Engagement - Grovo | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
In May 2014, Corporate Learning Network sat down with enterprise learning professional Chris Rosso for a conversation on the future of workplace learning. It was an area of considerable expertise for Rosso, who at the time led training for over 50,000 employees on one of the world’s best proprietary learning management systems. He was slated to be the keynote speaker at “NextGen LMS,” Corporate Learning Network’s upcoming expo. If anyone saw the future coming, it would have been him. But when asked what the ‘next generation’ of the LMS might actually be, Rosso balked at the question.

“For me it’s a misnomer, to be quite honest. I guess I have a big question around, is there a future for the LMS? I almost want to rephrase the question: what’s the next generation of learning technology?”

For the rest of the interview, Rosso detailed his plans to swap his existing LMS—which he had been integral in building—for a more powerful kind of technology. Something that would be able to curate content and serve as a system of record “without constraining us to a learning management system.”

Sanjay Sarma Rethinks the Professor’s Role

Sanjay Sarma Rethinks the Professor’s Role | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
S anjay Sarma argues that when it comes to technology, it’s easier to think big than to make small, incremental changes. So as the first-ever director of digital learning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he’s aiming to change the culture of teaching there by pushing the lecture model into the margins and using technology to rethink the professor’s role.

Since taking the position, in 2012, Mr. Sarma and his office have made significant inroads. (He also has a new title: vice president for open learning.) Two-thirds of the university’s undergraduates have now taken a course that uses the interactive software that was developed for edX, the nonprofit spinoff of MIT that offers free MOOCs.

Caroline Tanner's curator insight, April 1, 3:04 AM

GE Teach has gone through a bunch of iterations over the years. It is now built on the Google Maps API. On GE Teach students can compare two maps side-by-side. Students can select from gallery of map layers to compare side-by-side in GE Teach. In addition to comparing maps students can still use the drawing and measuring tools that you would typically find in Google's My Maps tool.
