A lot has been written about helping guide students to choose the 'right' materials that have 'authority' when they access the online world, but I think that's a mistake. There are no wrong or right sources of information, there is only information. We need to help students to think critically about that information understand the arguments within it, the rationale behind it, the bias that influenced it and above all how they, as individuals, personally respond to that information and apply it to their lives. There is a wonderful line from a poem by Walt Whitman

" re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency".


This was written in 1855, but in the world we now live in, this above all is what our children need to learn.

Disclaimer: The Tate Modern is one of my favorite museums. My previous apartment held a place of honor, above the couch, for a poster I picked up there. And, in 2014, I interviewed the developers of their awesome app, the Magic Tate Ball (re: Using “String and Sellotape” To Build the Magic Tate Ball). So, imagine my excitement when I was recently introduced to Kathryn Box at the Tate Gallery in London.

Kathryn manages and produces content for the Tate Kids website and the Tate Kids social channels, which focuses on games and films and articles that speak to kids’ interests in art and the wider world. After three years invested at the Tate, she seemed like the perfect person to speak with to learn about their latest innovations in digital learning and across the British art scene in general.

If a classroom gets iPads, a question you will often hear immediately is, “What apps should I download?” In our concern for machines taking over education, we often do things that encourage machines to take over our teaching. I have been privy to seeing many educators use “flashcard” apps with students, not because they see it as a better process, but because they feel they need to justify iPads in their classroom by using them (the device) in some way with their students. This is often because devices are thrust onto educators without much thought and support on what is possible to do with them and how this aligns with the vision of the community.


I always ask educators to think, “What could you create with this iPad that you couldn’t create before?” Focusing on what we can “create” versus what we “consume” only, is a great starting point. It is not that consumption and content isn’t important. It is just that both consumption and creation should be evident in education for true deep learning.

Content is a big consideration for organizations that are trying to evolve their learning and performance strategies. Most L&D teams, especially in large enterprises, aren’t starting from scratch. You’ve likely spent thousands of hours and tens of thousands of dollars building your content library. You’ve pieced together customized curricula that map to job codes across the company. You’ve even categorized your library based on the HR-approved competency list. Sure, half of this stuff was designed pre-2010, but it’s your content. You want to make the most of it! So, if you start to explore new strategies or technologies, you have to consider what may happen to all of that content.

There is, of course, a reason you’re looking for new ways to modernize your L&D practices. No, it’s not your content’s fault, but your content may be a symptom of a larger problem that continues to stifle many L&D teams. The more courses we have and the more topics we cover, the better we can explain our value to business stakeholders. Or at least we thought that was how it worked. We’ve fallen into the trap of associating our value as L&D to our content. But the workplace isn’t school—even if we do throw around the term “university” all the time. We’re no longer judged by seat times, completions, and test scores—even for compliance topics. In real life, the only content that matters is content that has a measurable impact on business results.

Is it possible to have the best of both a networked learning environment and an adaptive learning model implemented in the same system? The authors share their vision of the "next" next generation digital learning environment, the N2GDLE.

Two years ago, the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative published its widely cited white paper The Next Generation Digital Learning Environment: A Report on Research. The authors' objective was to "explore the gaps between current learning management tools and a digital learning environment that could meet the changing needs of higher education." In doing so, they joined a long line of critics and reformers who had similarly observed that the learning management system (LMS) had been "highly successful in enabling the administration of learning but less so in enabling learning itself."1

As an educator, making the transition to digital can be an exciting but challenging (even frustrating) experience.  Just because you host your slides on a Digital Learning Environment doesn’t mean you are providing a digital learning experience.  Will your students absorb information more effectively just because they have read it on screen rather than on paper?  As yet, there is a lack of conclusive evidence on whether online reading accommodates more in-depth comprehension of material.  Digitising your learning resources will not necessarily improve the learner’s experience.

Martin Dougiamas, the founder and CEO of the Australian company that drives development of the open source learning platform Moodle, does not mince words about the conflict he sees between open and proprietary developments in educational technology and in society at large. 

"There is a bit of a war going on around the planet right now," Dougiamas said in his opening comments to a recent Future Trends Forum video chat hosted by futurist Bryan Alexander. "We find ourselves at the vanguard of people who believe in openness, who believe in social good and social justice. On the other side of the fence, as you have in your country right now, there is a corporate takeover of the government. There is an increasing effect of very large, wealthy organizations focused on profits and increasing the inequality gap and focused on commercializing public services."

Speaking from his home in Perth, Australia, Dougiamas said he has started to refocus Moodle's activities to do a more effective job of spreading openness — particularly in education. "Education affects every other thing that human beings do on this planet, so it is important work."

Computers should amplify and extend authentic, meaningful learning experiences, not be used to achieve rote learning and test preparation. The new disciples of Edtech are, ironically, advocating for content delivery systems that are no better than the traditional textbook that they proclaim disdain for in pseudo-enlightened voices. If we want learners to thrive, learning needs to be personal. Nothing makes learning more personal than an inspiring, caring teacher. It therefore follows that if we want teachers to be inspiring and caring, we also need to provide them with the context and culture in which they can thrive. Learners — both students and teachers — must be placed at the centre of any change agenda in education. Personalization is not personal. But a caring teacher and tech proficiency are not incompatible: in fact, they go hand-in-hand. Informed and intelligent arguments about the motivations of tech conglomerates are no justification to deny students the tools they need to become empowered learners.

Since April 2015, when the original EDUCAUSE report on the next generation digital learning environment (NGDLE) was published, the idea has decidedly taken off. I believe we are still talking about the NGDLE two years later because the framework captures the imagination without limiting the scope of what the next generation environment could be. In fact, the universe of future environments has expanded since 2015 as various elements of next generation environments (e.g., analytics, adaptive learning, and social networking) have grown — both in number and complexity. The power of the NGDLE is its richness, not its specificity, as the wide-ranging articles in this issue of EDUCAUSE Review make clear.
