Center for 21st Century Universities

Center for 21st Century Universities | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
The Center for 21st Century Universities (C21U) is Georgia Tech's living laboratory for fundamental change in higher education. As higher education rapidly evolves, Georgia Tech is committed to leading the initiatives that will define the next generation of educational practices and technologies. Working in tandem with campus administrators and faculty, the center develops and tests new educational platforms and techniques.

Today, traditional colleges and universities face escalating operational challenges, including reduced funding, changing student demographics, questions regarding quality and value, and increased competition. Their success—or more bleakly, their survival—requires transformative change to enable new teaching and learning approaches. By testing educational techniques in actual classrooms, C21U develops proven technology-driven solutions that result in optimal student outcomes through creative institutional change. Combining technological solutions with practice and process modifications, C21U leverages beneficial industry and educational connections, offering important first steps toward defining the university of the 21st century.

TinCan API and Why it Matters to Learning Professionals

For years L&D professionals have been relying on the tried and true standard for tracking e-learning known as SCORM or Sharable Content Object Reference Model. The SCORM specification allows for communication and data collection between an e-learning participant and the learning management system (LMS) that monitors their progress. The problem, however, is that SCORM has limitations which don’t allow for the accurate tracking of much of the learning that currently occurs in the workplace.

Research: Teachers Say Tech Distractions More Concerning than Privacy, Security -- Campus Technology | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
"With this study we wanted to discover how educators around the world perceive the technology they and their students use on a daily basis," said Jared Stein, vice president of research and education at Instructure, in a prepared statement. "It is enlightening to find that the most pressing concern among educators was distraction, outranking issues like privacy and security. While privacy and security are critical issues, these findings suggest teachers are focused on how, not whether, technology should be used."

The Misappropriation of Cognitive Science Principles in EdTech | Forbes

The Misappropriation of Cognitive Science Principles in EdTech | Forbes | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Funding to edtech startups from venture capital firms has grown 503% over the past five years, according to CB insights. In total, the edtech market will receive about $2 billion in venture funding this year.  As in any other field, edtech entrepreneurs are interested in addressing critical issues in education while building a sustainable business.  To date, new edtech products and services have impacted some of these issues, but incorporating research from cognitive science offers edtech companies the opportunity to increase their impact.

In the last 20 years, scientific understanding of human learning and memory has significantly advanced.  Research in psychology and neuroscience has identified specific techniques that can help students encode, store and retrieve information; this research is just beginning to inform the work of edtech entrepreneurs.  There are a handful of learning technologies that are currently on the market that incorporate principles of cognitive science to support student achievement across multiple measures of learning efficacy, including knowledge creation, subject mastery, memory duration and study time reduction. However, there is also significant noise in the edtech market from companies who claim to be “science-based,” but whose products/services do not effectively use research-based strategies or tools.

eCampus News 7 trends that will revolutionize online learning - eCampus News

eCampus News 7 trends that will revolutionize online learning - eCampus News | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Let’s face it: Online education has always been the unhappy stepchild to traditional classroom teaching. It’s generally been seen as a make-do solution to serve students who—whether for reasons of geography or scheduling—were unable to attend class in person. And, more recently, its great claim to fame has been as a cost saver, a scalable way to enroll large numbers of students with minimal financial outlay. Well, the ugly duckling may be about to turn into a swan.

“We’re starting to hear a real desire for online learning to turn the corner and be focused on a mode of instruction that is inherently better than what we have today in traditional education,” said Chris Walsh, CEO of Zaption, a video learning company based in San Francisco. “People are starting to look at new tools and new opportunities to create an instructional experience that is different but hopefully better as well.”

The idea that online learning could actually be better than face-to-face instruction has gained credence in recent years as new technology solutions promise to make the educational experience more personalized and engaging. Has that time finally arrived? Here, eCampus News looks at seven trends that have the potential to remake the world of online learning.

Is binge-learning the next big thing for L&D?

Is binge-learning the next big thing for L&D? | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it
The concept of ‘binge learning’ is gathering momentum, particularly among young people.

It was recently announced that Deakin University students would be able to ‘binge learn’ post graduate units, and from January will be able to complete units online at the pace that suits them. This means that they could complete an entire course in just a few weeks.

The deputy vice-chancellor Beverley Oliver said that in this age of digital disruption universities should be flexible with the manner they offer education to students and allow more choice, in a similar way to Netflix. This would allow the students to avoid waiting several weeks until the trimester is over, she said.

In this two-part consideration of the future of online learning, we look at the patterns and trends which will shape online learning in the future and how the various components of the post-secondary education system, such as student population, course design and delivery, assessment, resource bases, teaching and learning models, and partnerships will be different from what we have now.

The first part, A 2016 Look at the Future of Online Learning: Advancing Technology and Online Learning – An Ideal Match for the Future, looks at developments in technology and what potential they offer for better learning, teaching, collaboration, mobility and other key aspects of online learning.

The second part, A 2016 Look at the Future of Online Learning: Transformations in Learners, Programs, Teaching and Learning, and Policy and Government, is a more in-depth consideration of the inter-related changes we see taking place across online learning and the implications of this for post-secondary education.

Donald Clark Plan B: 10 examples of how ‘DEVICE fetish’ is ruining EdTech

Donald Clark Plan B: 10 examples of how ‘DEVICE fetish’ is ruining EdTech | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Turtle projects are infrastructure projects that improve bandwidth in schools, the Open University, Janet & SuperJanet, Wikipedia, Khan Academy, YouTube, MOOCs. Moodle… I could go on all day. None of these initiatives are device-focused. They focus on cognitive ergonomics not consumer electronics. Lesson here – stop the largely wasted research on device-based projects, the endless stream of apps and do not keep on taking (and buying) the tablets. Think about learning and learners not devices.
