This isn't to say that online instructors who use voice/video and interactive tools to design and facilitate their courses are the only instructors who care. But these strategies are key to my ability to be present in the experiences of my students. And they're key to my ability to share my inflection, my concern, and my enthusiasm for them -- nuances text cannot convey.

Digital distraction in the classroom

Digital distraction in the classroom | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Even in this ideal environment, the temptation of digital distraction was too high. I might view this akin to addictive behavior now, and realize that students need more explicit support in order to do the right thing for their learning. I think that the biggest mistake that I made was to fail to have explicit guidelines for use of technology

Pushing Through The Perils of Teaching Online - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Pushing Through The Perils of Teaching Online - ProfHacker - The Chronicle of Higher Education | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

I knew the student evaluations from my spring online class would be harsh, but that harshness exceeded anything I had imagined.

The class was disorganized, students said again and again.

The professor was distant and uninvolved, others growled.

Several students dismissed my attempt to promote peer learning, complained about a lack of feedback, moaned about the added cost of an online class, snarled about my ability as a teacher. One even suggested that I was unfit to teach.

17 Free YouTube Tools Every Teacher should Know about | eLearning and Blended Learning in Higher Education | Scoop.it

"YouTube is undoubtedly the top video website online. The stats I have recently read are really amazing; 60 hours of video are uploaded every minute with over 3 billion pageviews per day. It also has thousands of channels ranging from technology to Laugh and Gags. Given the important of YouTube as a primary source of video content, Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has dedicated a whole section to reviewing educational tools and tips teachers and students can use to maximize their benefit from YouTube. In this regard, I have selected some of the popular tools I have already reviewed here and compiled them in a list that is handy for any teacher or educator to check whenever time permits."

"Have you ever dreamed of experiencing a watershed moment in your field? Moments like the splitting of the atom or the landing of a man on the moon? If you’re an educational leader, buckle up, because your moment is here. Schools are still experiencing the shockwaves of the Internet, a transformative global network that is radically changing how we think about learning and schooling. Moments like these are exhilarating, because our decisions matter so much. They are also terrifying, because we’re under enormous pressure—first, to find the right path; second, to move people in that direction."
