German grandmother gives birth to quadruplets at age 65 | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
A 65-year-old German grandmother gave birth to quadruplets at a Berlin hospital this week, with the three boys and a girl born prematurely at 26 weeks being in good health and having a good chance of survival, German TV network RTL reported on Saturday. The network, which had covered the pregnancy, said Annegret Raunigk already had 13 children and seven grandchildren. Raunigk, an English and Russian teacher in Berlin, had received fertility treatment in Ukraine and is the oldest woman in the world to have had quadruplets, RTL said, although other women of her age and older have given birth.

Could 'Green Rust' Be A Catalyst For Martian Life?

Could 'Green Rust' Be A Catalyst For Martian Life? | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
Mars is a large enough planet that astrobiologists looking for life need to narrow the parameters of the search to those environments most conducive to habitability. NASA's Mars Curiosity mission is exploring such a spot right now at its landing site around Gale Crater, where the rover has found extensive evidence of past water and is gathering information on methane in the atmosphere, a possible signature of microbial activity. One possibility is in an environment that includes “green rust,” a partially oxidized iron mineral.

Did Curiosity Rover Cause Mars' Mysterious Methane Spike?

Did Curiosity Rover Cause Mars' Mysterious Methane Spike? | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
Then in 2003 and 2004, earthbound telescopes and orbiting spacecraft rekindled the mystery with reports of large methane clouds in Mars' atmosphere. NASA's Curiosity roverwould resolve the matter, everyone hoped. The rover sampled Mars's atmosphere six times for methane between October 2012 and June 2013 — and detected none.

Back to the Future! Real-Life Hoverboard Breaks Record

Back to the Future! Real-Life Hoverboard Breaks Record | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
A hoverboard rider recently soared into Guinness World Records after flying a record distance on the futuristic, flying skateboard. Catalin Alexandru Duru, the inventor of the prototype hoverboard, traveled the length of two-and-a-half football fields (about 905 feet or 375 meters) to achieve the world record title before landing gently in the sparkling water of Quebec's Lake Ouareau. "The prototype can be used anywhere but is usually tested over water because of how dangerously high it can fly (which is ironic considering that the movie joked that it can't)," Duru wrote in a description of a YouTube video of the hoverboard's record-breaking flight.

Ultra-Fast 'Hyperloop' Train Gets Test Track in California

Ultra-Fast 'Hyperloop' Train Gets Test Track in California | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
The "Hyperloop," a hypothetical high-speed transportation system that could shuttle people between Los Angeles and San Francisco in only 30 minutes, just sped a bit closer to reality. First proposed in 2013 by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, the Hyperloop would transport passengers in floating pods inside low-pressure tubes at speeds of more than 750 mph (1,200 km/h). Now, the company Hyperloop Transportation Technologies Inc. (which is not affiliated with Musk or Tesla) has inked a deal with landowners in central California to build the world's first Hyperloop test track, according to market research firm Navigant Research.

World has no choice but to decarbonize: U.N. climate chief

World has no choice but to decarbonize: U.N. climate chief | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
By Megan Rowling BARCELONA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Responding to climate change in the next 15 years is the world's "mega development project", given the need to invest trillions of dollars in infrastructure, creating jobs and economic stability, the United Nations' top climate change official said on Tuesday. "It makes fundamental economic sense" for countries to push forward on tackling climate change because of the benefits it will bring in terms of food, water and energy, as well as employment," Christiana Figueres told a carbon market conference in Barcelona. This, together with the speed at which businesses are acting on climate change and efforts to put a price on carbon, mean "a decarbonized world is now irreversible, irrefutable," the head of the U.N. climate change secretariat told the conference.

Why Our Ancestors Were More Gender Equal Than Us | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
It is often believed that hierarchical and sometimes oppressive social structures like the patriarchy are somehow natural – a reflection of the law of the jungle. But the social structure of today’s hunter gatherers suggests that our ancestors were in fact highly egalitarian, even when it came to gender. Their secret? Not living with many relatives.

Severe Infections Linked to Lower IQs

Severe Infections Linked to Lower IQs | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
Researchers from the University of Copenhagen and Aarhus University in Denmark examined the hospital records of 190,000 Danish men born between 1974 and 1994. All the men took IQ tests at age 19, as part of the process of signing up for Denmark's mandatory draft. After adjusting for factors known to track with people's IQ scores, such as social conditions and the education levels of their parents, the researchers found that the average IQ score of the men who had been hospitalized for an infection before they took the IQ test — about 35 percent of the study cohort — were 1.76 points below the average of the men in the study who had not been hospitalized for an infection.

Modern Human Leg Mummified Using Ancient Egyptian Methods

Modern Human Leg Mummified Using Ancient Egyptian Methods | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
The team adhered to ancient Egyptian techniques to mummify part of the human body, which had been donated to science. The findings, detailed Friday (May 22) in the journal The Anatomical Record, give researchers some fascinating new clues about the ancient Egyptian embalming process. "We wanted to have an evidence-based methodology" for understanding what the mummification process looked like, said Christina Papageorgopoulou, one of the researchers on the new study and a physical anthropologist at the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece.

A genetically modified herpes virus was effective in fighting skin cancer by infecting and destroying cancer cells as well as triggering an immune response, according to results of a clinical trial released on Tuesday. It was the first time an advanced-stage trial of this type of drug has shown such positive results, according to scientists from The Institute of Cancer Research in London who published their study in the American Journal of Clinical Oncology. In the study, more than 16 percent of those treated with the drug had a treatment response lasting longer than six months, compared with two percent in the control groups.

Famous gray wolf in Oregon may have more puppies | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
By Shelby Sebens PORTLAND, Ore. (Reuters) - A gray wolf who signaled the comeback of his species in Oregon and California might be welcoming some new pups to his pack, wildlife biologists said on Wednesday. The wolf, known as OR-7 because he was the seventh of his species ever collared in Oregon with a tracking device, is showing signs he may have more offspring after siring three pups last year, two of which officials know to have survived. Just the behavior we're seeing," said John Stephenson, wolf coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services in Oregon.

Aliens Will Be Bear-Size, According to Math

Aliens Will Be Bear-Size, According to Math | Eldritch Weird | Scoop.it
With thousands of planets outside Earth's solar system, there's a pretty good chance that some of them have the conditions needed for life. Fergus Simpson, of the University of Barcelona, outlines his statistical argument on the prepublished site arXiv. But although Simpson's mathematical experiment may get scientists and others thinking about the possibilities of alien life, some researchers say some of his statistical assumptions may not hold true.
