ELLs and the Debate Over the No Child Left Behind Rewrite

ELLs and the Debate Over the No Child Left Behind Rewrite | ELAdvocacy | Scoop.it
A large coalition of advocacy groups for Hispanic students and English-learners are urging members of Congress to vote against a Republican rewrite of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.
Kristina Robertson's insight:

If the legislature ever gets their act together to revise and pass the ESEA (No Child Left Behind) education law - I hope it isn't at the expense of ELLs.  In this current version the targets for sub-groups (ELLs) is removed, other test data can be used and Title III (ELL funding) is absorbed into Title I.   Where's the equity?  How will ELLs get the attention they deserve if there is no accountability and no funding!?

As congress prepares to vote on the DREAM Act, we lay out why the DREAM Act is good for our economy, good for our security and good for our nation.

Kristina Robertson's insight:

Many people don't know the basics of the DREAM Act - it is not a free loan program for undocumented students - it is not a gift for those who broke the law.  The DREAM Act is a chance for Americans to invest in bright, dedicated young people who will make this country a better place through educational opportunity.

This article takes my research back to the end of 2010 when it was near time to vote on the DREAM ACT the article explains thoroughly why the legislation should pass and what are the benefits. Reading this allows me to recall exactly why i took the position i took when the legislation was introduced and it is going to be a good foundation regardless where i choose to go with the topic of undocumented students.
