Internet puede colapsar por su éxito y lo hará inicialmente en países como China e India, restringiendo su crecimiento y su uso, especialmente en estos países asiáticos densamente poblados.


Para prevenirlo en países como el nuestro, conectado a la red mundial que padecería los efectos globales del colapso, la Red Nacional Académica de Tecnología Avanzada Renata, que propicia la colaboración entre las instituciones académicas y científicas de Colombia en conexión con las redes académicas internacionales y los centros de investigación más desarrollados del mundo, se encuentra comprometida con el cambio de los protocolos de internet que se usan convencionalmente para navegar: IPv4 o IPv5 (Protocolos de Internet, Versiones 4 y 5).

La necesidad de que las universidades permanezcan actualizadas en cuanto a los temas y resultados de sus avances teóricos y sus investigaciones aplicadas, es cada vez más una realidad para la cual no existe alternativa, es decir, o el conocimiento se divulga y se comunica o no avanzará al ritmo que lo requieren los países en desarrollo.

En este camino de la conectividad del conocimiento, tal como si se tratara de un gran “cerebro social” donde caben todas las disciplinas y saberes, la tecnología blanda debe desarrollarse y crecer, por eso es que en el 2013 continúa la capacitación que permitirá acompañar a 100 ingenieros de 33 instituciones conectadas a la red Renata en la adopción del protocolo IPv6.

There has been a surge of questions of late regarding IPv6 and whether it can be used to better identify individuals on the Internet. Everyone from marketeers to law enforcement officials seem to hold the same misconception that IPv6 is going to make it possible to expose people in a way that IPv4 does not.

 

It is true that IPv6 will change addressing on the Internet.  Many of us hope it restores the ability to identify an actual network endpoint -- a feature that we lost a number of years ago in IPv4.  But some appear to be imagining a future where each machine has its very own address, and that these addresses will be easily traced whenever a person visits a website, plays a game online, or even opens an email.

 

In fact, IPv6 actually has features that are designed to foil these sorts of plans. Also, because of the enormous IPv6 address space, it's rather unlikely that a single machine will have a single IPv6 address.

 

To make sense of the discussion, we need some history.

Si las direcciones IPv4 (esas formadas por cuatro grupos de numeros entre 0 y 255 separados por puntos, del tipo nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn) ya eran algo arcano para los no iniciados, con la llegada del nuevo rango de direcciones ampliado IPv6, en donde para empzar los números se expresan en hexadecimal, hasta los más expertos se pueden volver locos.

 

Porque..... ¿quien entiende lo que significa una dirección del tipo: "fe80::2000:aff:fea7:f7c"?

 

Este artículo nos ayudará a comprender mejor el significado escondido en las IPv6.

This week’s #BroadData is a look at the end of a limited Internet and the beginning of an endless one.

 

If you haven’t already heard of the end of IPv4, you’re sure to hear more in the future.  Essentially, the number of IP addresses – the unique codes that identify individual Internet connected devices – are running out.

 

Each IP address is 32-bits long, which allows for about 4 billion unique addresses. Some regions have already exhausted usable IP addresses and are under emergency IP measures.

 

The solution is IPv6 – a new 128-bit IP address that allows for trillions and trillions of unique IP numbers. Problem solved, right? Well, transitioning is easier said than done. Many websites and companies have made the switch and are ready for the new IP system, but for others it will take time and huge investments to make sure the new IP addresses work.

 

The cable industry has been a leader in preparing its networks for the transition. But solving this problem and getting everyone working with IPv6 is going to come from efforts across all IP-dependent industries and organizations.

 

To better conceptualize the need for the transition, see the chart below. It reveals the explosive growth in use of the old IPv4 standard and perfectly highlights the impending need for the switch. Just look at Brazil…
