Two of the most talked about startups in the tech world today are Pinterest and Foursquare. At IGNITION, SAI editor Alyson Shontell asked SV Angel's David Lee, Spark Capital's Bijan Sabet, and BoxGroup's David Tisch to weigh in on whether these companies were the real deal or just hype.

If you plan on beginning a marketing strategy, make sure all employees are well aware of the change. The last thing you want is to offend a customer by treating them like a thief or a crazy person. It’s bad for business and can generate some pretty quick, negative feedback, which can and will get around. (Sort of like this blog post.)

Companies want to be able to know where you are at all times so they can hit you up with an ad/sale/coupon/offer/message when you are at or near certain locations. Mobile devices make this pretty easy to do -- Foursquare makes it even easier. .

I don't know anything about Foursquare's fundraising plans--but as a user, I certainly hope the company lives to die another day. Somewhere along the line, the product went from changing the way I interact with the real world around me--running into friends more often, choosing to go to stick to habits to maintain a Mayorship--to aiming its sights on Yelp.

Foursquare has loads of data on users’ habits, but the information it can share with merchants has been tightly limited. Until now. Under the new priivacy policy set to take effect Jan. 28, far fewer limits are placed on those same merchants. They will be able to see information on more customers, according to an e-mail Foursquare sent to users Dec. 31, being able to see everyone who checked in over an unspecified period longer than the current three hours.

Facebook's new Nearby local search feature could become a Foursquare killer one day. So far, however, it's not as comprehensive, deep or personal for users.

Two engineers recently left Foursquare to turn a side project into the main event, adding to a flow of talent out of the location service. Pierre Valade and Jeremy Le Van have created Sunrise, a calendar they hope will put Apple's built-in one to shame. It's an app that stores your events in the cloud and syncs across multiple calendars and devices. It's received rave reviews from gadget reporters.

PrivCo, a research company, claims Foursquare will "fail by the end of 2013" and sell for "less than $50 million.". While that prediction seems like a stretch, Foursquare is clearly in a heap of trouble. What's worse, CEO Dennis Crowley had multiple opportunities to cash-in on the app back when things looked brighter.

Foursquare has long been a company whose cachet among tech scenesters seemed to exceed its traction among ordinary consumers and advertisers. But does that mean it's doomed? ivCo, the data and research firm that specializes in covering private companies, thinks so. In a list of 10 predictions for 2013 sent to clients today, PrivCo forecasts the failure of the location-based social city guide and its acquisition, at a fire-sale price, within the next 12 months.

Most vertical or niche versions of popular consumer websites fail. A few have ho-hum exits. But I’m hard pressed to think of many that become truly large companies. The biggest exception might be LinkedIn, which I’m sure was pitched as a Friendster for work at some point back in the day. Not only did LinkedIn survive — it outlasted the original company it was compared to and the entire early wave of social networks.
