Oracle joins White House in STEM campaign to empower girls and women

Oracle joins White House in STEM campaign to empower girls and women | EI news | Scoop.it

$3M pledge aims to educate girls in science, technology, engineering and math

On the heels of Oracle’s $200 million commitment to support Computer Science (CS) Education for All, the White House announced Oracle’s additional $3 million investment to immerse girls worldwide in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

The company’s commitment of direct and in-kind funding supports “Let Girls Learn,” a U.S. government initiative aimed at helping adolescent girls around the world go to school and stay in school.

“It takes 25 years to build a computer engineer, not 25 hours, so we need to get started,” said Safra Catz, Oracle CEO. “The computer sciences lose too many girls too early and once lost, it’s nearly impossible to get them back. We want more girls focused on building upon science and math fundamentals and we want more women choosing the technical disciplines because they are both prepared to do so and because they believe it will advance their career opportunities.”

Building a strong online presence takes time and effort but is well worth the investment.

iMet Global's curator insight, January 10, 2014 1:27 AM

Engagement. That is the keyword. And given that content is the very structure upon which all online branding takes place, it is vital to get it right on your website. The website is usually the first part of the online positioning kit for a brand.

Marcellus Maxximus's curator insight, January 13, 2014 2:13 AM

I found this interesting because it told you ways to make your site better which in return will promote products and things of yours better. It was a good read. And with a better site means more people will likely go on it.

This is a valuable link especially for teachers who need to use different apps on the go. Today, using Google Docs on your Google drive has become almost the norm, and when you have to creat mind-maps and other Google docs, then it makes sense to have your apps linked and served right at your doorstep, which is your Google drive!

eLearning Business Trends in 2014

eLearning Business Trends in 2014 | EI news | Scoop.it

I’m sure by now you’ve seen all kinds of predictions on what elearning is going to look like in 2014. Social, MOOC, gamification, games, byte-sized learning, performance management, mobile content, HTML5, Tin Can API - these were the buzz words in 2013, and many gurus have predicted that these trends will gain further momentum in 2014.

World-a heterogeneous eLearning market

eLearning has different drivers in different geographies, and this is what I see happening basis our conversations with customers and prospects across the globe..

Predictions on how e-learning business might trend in 2014 based on key business drivers across geographies, L&D challenges and e-learning buzz words like Social, MOOC, gamification, games, byte-sized learning, performance management, mobile..

Mellissa Rempfer, Founder of the Brilliance and Business Community's curator insight, January 8, 2014 8:26 PM

Organizations whether it be a small business, NPO, or corporation- each are always looking for a way to increase performance, and training and development are right in alignment with supporting this work. This is an interesting read and insight in how e-learning is growing and changing around the world. If you have an organization that is just in one country or expands internationally, this article provides some great insight in what is happening so you can accommodate with the growing trend.

What I find also interesting is the increase in demand for ROI with learning retention, while using mobile devices and the need to have search capabilities and different mediums of presenting the content. Whew, that is a lot to demand from an instructional designer to work magic with, and still be able to make sure learning and engagement are taking place between the facilitator/instructor and learner. It seems like we are living in a time when people want everything yesterday and as quick as possible at their fingertips. Learning is a development skill and does not happen instantly; it happens over time. This writer at least is aware that there is a need of having further continual learning structure that e-learning can offer to support the initial learning, which I know helps connect and resonate the information in a more integrated way.

This article also demonstrated that not everyone can be instructional designers and teachers, and having someone who is skilled in this field can make or break the success of how effective your staff and organization is going to do with its growth and clients. Having someone who has no formal experience/training to design classes, workshops, trainings, and programs is a disservice to your organization and can hurt your growth. By not understanding or leveraging the ins and outs of what are the needs for success for the adult learner is dangerous! I say this because I once thought I was this fabulous trainer and designer just because I could figure out how to do a ttraining and people liked what I did. However after spending several years working on a Masters in this field, I discovered the complexities of not only the learning process, but the design components need to be addressed. Together this makes a faboulus designer and trainer/education.  Often times people leave what could be a great learning experience  as an ok to flat one (and not one that people are eager to share to have other people sign up that they know). I can say with confidence since this new insight and commitment to the understanding the complexitities of this line of work. Program and trainings designs from myself and my company have sold themselves, because attendees who have participated in something we designed for another company approach us to have us design work for their companies to help them grow and thrive.

So my wish for your 2014 year, don't bore people. Engage them and meet them right where they are. These are fellow humans who hate being participants in yet another dull and boring trainings. Make your trainings interesting, relevant, applicable, thought provoking, and memorable. If you are not doing these, then it is time to reassess your training program.

Best wishes,

-Mellissa Rempfer

Overwhelmed By Your App Options? Try These 10 Must Have Apps For 2014

Overwhelmed By Your App Options? Try These 10 Must Have Apps For 2014 | EI news | Scoop.it

In 2009, Apple trademarked their catchphrase, “there’s an app for that.” Little did we know how true that would turn out to be. Nowadays there really is an app for everything. There are finance apps, game apps, reading apps, cooking apps, every kind of app you can imagine. You can deposit checks via app. You can photoshop via app. You can even get an app that will stop you from texting while drinking. With so many apps to sift through, however, it can be nearly impossible to separate out the useful apps from the gimmicky ones.
