What can Restorative Justice do?

What can Restorative Justice do? | eHealth application in Penitentiaries, prisons or correctional | Scoop.it

What can restorative justice do?

Reduce crime. Restorative justice processes have been shown to reduce reoffending as much or more than prison for both juveniles and adults.Make communities safer. Restorative justice in diversion helps keep low-level offenders out of prison, giving them the chance to receive treatment and services to become contributing citizens.Make schools safer. At a middle school in Oakland, restorative justice processes helped the school reduce suspensions by 84%, with zero incidents of physical fighting, zero referrals to disciplinary expulsion hearings, and increased teacher retention at the school.Help victims heal. Victims and their family members who participated in restorative justice practices reported high levels of satisfaction with the process as well as reduced post-traumatic stress disorder.Help spend our tax dollars wisely. Restorative justice processes cost up to eight times less than traditional juvenile and criminal justice processes.

Voices from Solitary: Disciplined Into Madness and Death

Voices from Solitary: Disciplined Into Madness and Death | eHealth application in Penitentiaries, prisons or correctional | Scoop.it

"This essay is dedicated to D and all those who have given their minds and/or lives trying to pay their debt to society and to those who will forever be haunted and scarred from our justice system. Once self-worth and hope dies within our souls, what is left behind is a shell of life that can see no future, no redemption and no chance for a normal life. It is then that our minds realize how truly unwanted we are and how on a daily basis we are reminded that society has no use for us. Day by day life becomes very dark, some lose their minds, some will never be the same, and some just give in and take their own lives."

Our children are affected by our incarceration. Inmates Mental Health

Our children are affected by our incarceration. Inmates Mental Health | eHealth application in Penitentiaries, prisons or correctional | Scoop.it

"As an incarcerated mother, I see how my sons have been affected by my absence. They are teenagers now, young men really, and I have worked hard to maintain a relationship with them. I see the justice system as a failure! It has failed not only the children, but the incarcerated as well. Many changes need to be made and our children need their rights protected. We cannot give up. Our children are too important, so we must continue to fight for them."
