CAIRO: Vodafone-Egypt will consider the role of new energy in the telecommunication sector through participating in the of Future and Investment Opportunities in the New and Renewable Energy conference on Feb. 17 and 18, according to a statement released Saturday.

Khaled Hegazy, head of legal and external affairs’ sector at Vodafone-Egypt’s, is scheduled to give a speech at the conference, highlighting the possibility of using the new sources of energy and various alternatives, in order to generate the required power for running mobile sites.

This comes in an attempt to overcome the repeated power outages and fuel shortage, added Vodafone-Egypt.

Vodafone’s panel session during the conference, moderated by former Minister of Petroleum Osama Kamal, will discuss the private sector’s overview of new energy and its impact on achieving environmental compatibility.

Internet services were partially disrupted on Wednesday in Egypt due to damages in an undersea cable.

A submarine cable near Egypt's north coast has been cut, said a source from the Telecom Egypt Company as reported by the Middle East News Agency.

The source added that they have not yet determined the reasons behind the damages.

Telecom Egypt announced that the internet services will be recovered gradually and be back to normal by night, adding that they are providing alternative capacities to internet users.

Selon Vodafone, son choix découle de sa nouvelle stratégie de déconstruction de son infrastructure administrative.

Asrany Reveals Internet Users 35% Up In Two Years | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Waseem Arsany, CEO of LinkdotNet, one of the leading internet solutions and service providers (ISP) in Egypt, has revealed that the number of internet users have increased during the past two years between 30% and 35% of the total number of subscribers to all service providers in the market.

He added that LinkdotNet acquires the second rank of market share of internet services in the Egyptian market, noting that LinkdotNet eyes to increase its network’s users in 2013 through providing new services that cater to the aspirations of users for higher speeds and lower prices.

 

Moreover, Arsany emphasized that LinkdotNet cooperates now with Telecom Egypt in order to resolve the problems faced by the customers in some Telephone Centrals such as Nasr City, Maadi, and Heliopolis, explaining that they witnessed some bottlenecks in the last period due to the increasing demand for internet services and the relatively low capacities as compared to the volume of use.

 

Furthermore, he asserted that the internet service providers in Egypt are looking forward to make Telecom Egypt finalizes the replacement of current copper cables with optical fiber cables that provide higher speeds so as to be in line with the government’s target to offer high-speed internet, achieve broadband strategy and keep up with global internet speeds by 2020.

Egyptian operator Mobinil's CEO has said the company is considering a raise in its free float from 1% to 15% and is favouring the selling of shares to the wider market to comply with ownership regulations, Reuters reported.

 

"It's very challenging to raise money in Egypt even if it's a high-profile name like Mobinil - they would need to give a big discount," The National Investor portfolio manager Sebastien Henin.

La compagnie historique Telecom Egypt a signé avec Mena Submarine Cable System (MENA), une filiale du groupe Orascom Telecom, un accord de cession des droits d’utilisation d’une partie de sa fibre optique pour une période de 20 ans.

En vertu de l’accord Mena devrait pouvoir utiliser une partie de la fibre optique appartenant à Telecom Egypt et qui se situe entre la zone de Zaafarana, sur les côtes de la mer rouge, et Abou Talat, de l’autre côté de la Méditerranée. Il faut dire que ce projet de fibre optique achevé devrait relier l’Inde, le sud de l’Italie, le sultanat d’Oman, l’Egypte et l’Arabie saoudite.

Orascom Telecom  qui a déjà effectué la partie maritime des travaux espérait voir son projet Mena achevé en 2013 mais l’entreprise dirigée par le milliardaire égyptien Naguib Sawiris a dû faire face aux défis des autorisations administratives. L’accord signé avec TE lui permet d’envisager désormais de rendre son service disponible d’ici 1 an.

 Dans le cadre de cet accord TE devrait toucher une enveloppe d’un peu plus de 30 millions $. La nouvelle semble avoir renforcé la confiance des investisseurs d’Orascom Telecom. Sur l’Egytian Exchange où la compagnie est cotée, ses titres ont gagné 1,69% occupant le premier rang au palmarès des volumes échangés.

Aiming to pump confidence in the Egyptian economy, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Atef Helmy left to the United States in a week-long visit, including the cities of Seattle and San Francisco's Silicon Valley.

 

Helmy will meet with executives of large computer and information technology conglomerates, including Microsoft, Intel, Oracle, Google, HP, Apple, Facebook, Yahoo, General Electric, Cisco, Symantec and (TIE), according to a statement issued by the ministry.

The minister will attempt to send positive messages about the stability of the situation in Egyptian IT and telecom sector and the market's current ability to absorb more investment.

Helmy will also meet some members of the Egyptian community working in IT on the west coast to discuss opportunities for cooperation.

Telecom Egypt reports 452 mln EG pound profit in Q4

Landline monopoly Telecom Egypt reported on Monday a 452 million Egyptian pound ($66.91 million) net profit in the fourth quarter and a 2.61 billion pound net profit for the 2012 full year, down 12.8 percent from 2011.

The company, which is banking on data services to offset lower fixed line income, also reported a 37.1 percent margin in its 2012 earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), versus 46.7 percent in 2011. ($1 = 6.7558 Egyptian pounds)

Telecom Egypt has announced it will be ready to offer mobile services six weeks after it receives the network licence, Mena has reported.

The license is pending the government's approval of the different tariff plans that are currently being offered by the state-owned telecoms operator. Egypthas three mobile operators: VodafoneEgypt, MobiNil, which is controlled by France Telecom, and Dubai-based Etisalat.
