"The pardoning of 230 people by the head of the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, earlier this month was received with mixed feelings by activists.

The same was true of statements made by the head of the military judiciary, Adel El-Morsy, when he announced that as soon as the emergency law was lifted, civilians would not be referred for military trial and no civilians would be tried for their opinions." (Dena Rashed)

New book examines life of Sheikh who turned Al-Azhar into a modern university | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Politics and Al-Azhar examines the life of Sheikh Mohamed Al-Zawahri, an important figure in the transformation of Al-Azhar in the modern age.

Sheikh Mohamed Al-Zawahri (1878-1944) wasn't just one of the learned men who led Al-Azhar institution; he is credited with turning it into a modern University. The Sheikh dedicated himself to the project and had to resign as soon as it was completed due to illness. This is an unusual occurrence at Al-Azhar where Sheikhs very rarely step down." In pursuit of a revolutionary elite

In pursuit of a revolutionary elite | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Blocked from everything but oblique criticism for decades, Egypt's current political elite is incapable of formulating a practical agenda for moving the country forward, hence the impasse.

The countdown to parliamentary elections has started, and the scope of emergency law has been broadened, while most Egypt's politicians remain focused on less important issues that have only marginal impact on the future of both the country and the revolutionary process." (Ibrahim El-Houdaiby)

Nubiens : Retour au royaume de l'or

Nubiens : Retour au royaume de l'or | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

(Marwa Hussein)

Egypt youth coalition says to contest elections

"Egypt's Revolution Youth Coalition, formed in the early days of the uprising that toppled Mubarak on Feb. 11, said on a social networking site monitored on Thursday that it plans to field as many as 200 independent candidates under a proportional list system with its name.

A political analyst warned, however, that the youth groups face an uphill battle against the old guard and those movements that may be better funded." (Dina Zayed)

French reporter banned entry to Egypt

French reporter banned entry to Egypt | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it
Security authorities at Cairo International Airport on Saturday prevented a French reporter from entering Egypt, saying she is banned from entering the country, a security source has said.

"Egypt deported a French journalist on Saturday who had been placed on a banned list for allegedly insulting the country, security sources said. They identified the journalist as Marie Edmee Josette Duboc and said she was held at Cairo's airport terminal after flying in from Paris on Friday evening when officials found her name on a list of people banned from entering the country.

"The journalist had deliberately tried to discredit Egypt," one security source said without giving any further details.

"Thus, she had been put on the list of those banned from entry. She and her child were treated well during their stay at the airport until her flight took off back to Paris," the source added." (Reuters)

MFAH | Lecture “Embodiment of Empire : Tutankhamun and the Pharaohs of Egypt”

MFAH | Lecture “Embodiment of Empire : Tutankhamun and the Pharaohs of Egypt” | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Presented by Dr. Bob Brier, Senior Research Fellow, Long Island University

Tutankhamun is the most famous pharaoh in Egypt’s three-thousand-year history, but he still remains a mystery. When Howard Carter discovered his nearly intact tomb in 1922, there was nothing that said who his mother was or who his father was—and scholars are still not certain. After five years of clearing the tomb's hundreds and hundreds of objects, Carter concluded that Tutankhamen had eluded him.

Strikes, safety and students | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"The ongoing lack of security on the country's streets as well as striking teachers have left many parents clueless as to the fate of their children when going back to school. More than 17 million students returned to school on Saturday after almost four months off. This is the first academic year since the 25 January Revolution which toppled the regime headed by former president Hosni Mubarak. All of Egypt's 45,773 schools kicked off the new academic year as scheduled on 17 September, negating rumours that schools will be postponed until 1 October like the universities." (Reem Leila)
