Egypt’s Siwa Oasis, a troubling environmental future

Egypt’s Siwa Oasis, a troubling environmental future | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Located 70 kilometers from Egypt’s Libyan border, Egypt’s Siwa Oasis has sustained what was once dubbed “the last outpost of humanity” in the Libyan Desert for centuries, with its arable land and fresh water sources.Over the last few years, Siwa has debuted on the world stage as a symbol of sustainability and environmental development, with a budding eco-tourism industry born out of the allure of the oasis’ distinctively unadulterated natural resources and pristine culture.

The enticing discourse of sustainability, however, masks the reality that Siwa’s lifeline, the Nubian Aquifer, has been significantly damaged ." (Sarah Sheffer)

Modern Technology Reveals Clues From Egyptian Mummy

Modern Technology Reveals Clues From Egyptian Mummy | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Researchers using modern medical technology to examine an Egyptian mummy have so far determined that it was a child of a wealthy family from the Roman period in Egypt around 100 A.D. The mummy, owned by the Spurlock Museum at the University of Illinois, underwent X-rays and CT scans in 1990, and more scans with updated CT technology this year. Researchers also analyzed fragments of cloth, insects and hardened resins collected from the mummy." (USNews)

"Over two decades ago, extensive research was done to gather as much information as possible on the ancient Egyptian mummy that had entered the Museum’s collections. Still, questions like “Is it a boy or a girl?” have persisted. A multi-disciplinary team was gathered to increase our knowledge of this child through the performance of updated medical techniques during the spring of 2011. At this event, a panel of experts will discuss the new techniques applied in this study and will reveal the information gathered.

(...) Dr. Wisseman was the project coordinator of the first mummy study in 1990–1991 and is author of The Virtual Mummy, which documents this research. This event is co-sponsored by the Program on Ancient Technologies and Archaeological Materials and the Dr. Allan C. Campbell Family Distinguished Speaker Series, with research funded in part through the Richard and Barbara Faletti Gallery of African Cultures Fund." (Spurlock Museum)

Egypt settles legal disputes with foreign firms

"The Egyptian government has settled five disputed deals with European and Gulf investors out of court, the country's top investment official said, in a move that could lead to more cases being resolved and a boost to investor confidence. Many Egyptians accuse ousted President Hosni Mubarak's government of doing deals that benefited the rich elite and top officials at the expense of the country's 80 million people.

His overthrow has prompted more citizens to challenge business deals made during his three decades in power. The disputes have added to an uncertain climate for the investors that Egypt needs to revive growth and attack unemployment.

Osama Saleh, head of the General Authority for Free Zones and Investment (GAFI), said a new set of standards had been agreed between the government and investors whose contracts had contained "false" procedures." (arabfinance)

Exposición "Napoleón Bonaparte en Egipto"

Exposición "Napoleón Bonaparte en Egipto" | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Tourism in Alexandria After Arab Spring

Tourism in Alexandria After Arab Spring | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"A total of 14.8 million tourists came to Egypt last year, feeding $13 billion into the economy. But the number of visitors fell by 80 percent in the first month after the revolution, and the industry will probably finish this year down 25 percent, according to the tourism ministry. That is a loss of more than $3 billion. (...)

Some tourism officials and tour operators are promoting Alexandria, which saw Coptic protests in October but nothing close to the violence of Cairo, as a safer bet. The Mediterranean city, founded by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C., has never been a big draw for modern Westerners. Preservationists and the Egyptian government have been trying to change that in recent years." (Joshua Hammer/The New York Times)

Révoltes arabes : le nouveau défi islamiste | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Copts Should ‘Participate Fully’ in ‘new Egypt’

Copts Should ‘Participate Fully’ in ‘new Egypt’ | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Images of Mohamed Tantawy, chief of the ruling military council in Egypt, meeting with Coptic Pope Shenouda III last week brought back memories of the old regime’s attempts to defuse sectarian tensions through staged meetings which often resulted in nothing. Yet, this most recent meeting comes at a very critical moment in Egypt’s modern history and could be a great step in the right direction. (...)

Dialogue between the church and the state is vital for the nation’s stability. It also sends a message to Coptic Egyptians, emphasising their role as an intrinsic part of the nation. And it reassures Copts that the state is willing to take measures ensuring that violence against their community will not reoccur." (Common Ground News Service)
