Egypt women candidates go faceless on campaign ads

Egypt women candidates go faceless on campaign ads | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Female candidates for Egypt’s upcoming parliamentary elections are not getting their faces on campaign advertisements. At least not the Islamist candidates.

Initially, Marwa Ibrahim al-Qamash, who is running in the Daqaliyah province, put up a flower as her campaign photo, but after sarcastic remarks about the campaign appeared on Twitter from activists, the flower was taken down and her husband’s photos appeared in its place.

The move did not stop the ridicule on social media networks, with activists attacking the woman as a “puritanical” radical." (Desmond Shephard/Bikya Masr)

Exploradio - The papyrus window

Exploradio - The papyrus window | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Kent State students are among a handful of undergrads nationwide given access to ancient papyrus texts from Egypt.

The discovery of a huge stash of papyrus scrolls in the Egyptian desert 100 years ago is gradually adding to our understanding of life in ancient times. But it’s taken scholars decades to translate the thousands of fragile papyrus texts.

For the first time, a small number of undergraduate students have been enlisted to study the rare finds.

In this week’s Exploradio we decipher the papyrus of Oxyrynchus." (WKSU's Jeff St.Clair)

Interior Ministry announces the closure of Great Pyramid | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"An official security source in Egypt's Interior Ministry announced the closure of the Great Pyramid of Giza area Friday, November 11 and the cancellation of all foreign visits to the archeological area of the pyramids to avoid any confusion among people.

The Public Administration of Tourism Police was notified by the Supreme Council of Antiquities of the cancellation of the Masonic ceremony that was scheduled to be held on Friday.

Ten revolutionary coalitions announced their solidarity and support for the call adopted by a number of activists and public personalities to hold Friday prayers at the Pyramids area. They also called for a demonstration to express their dismay at the decision to allow the Masonic ceremony at the archeological area by Egyptian officials." (Sahar Talaat/Youm7)

A mere 13.8 percent fear the lingering of the army’s rule while 60.5 percent see that the most worrying issue is a lack of security on the streets." (Manar Ammar/Bikya Masr)

"The meaning of wine in Egyptian tombs: the three amphorae from Tutankhamun's burial chamber", by Maria Rosa Guasch Jané

"The meaning of wine in Egyptian tombs: the three amphorae from Tutankhamun's burial chamber", by Maria Rosa Guasch Jané | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Antiquity Journal", Volume 85 Number 329, pp. 851–858

"Three wine jars in Tutankhamun's fabulously preserved burial chamber had been opened and placed east, west and south of the sarcophagus. By means of inscriptions, endorsed by residue analysis, the author distinguishes the contents as red wine, white wine and a high quality fortified wine, and goes on to argue for specific symbolic meanings for these choices in the context of religious change after Akhenaten."

(altarimini.it)

Misr International Films forays into independent cinema

Misr International Films forays into independent cinema | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"(Youssef) Chahine was not only a revolutionary filmmaker, but also a cultural visionary and a true renegade in the film industry. While some of his greatest achievements can be found prominently in the films he directed, it should be stressed that his prestigious production house, Misr International Films (MIF), continues to fill the void of his absence.

Founded in 1972 by Chahine, the ever-growing production house has produced over 45 films, documentaries and TV dramas, including the first of his four-part autobiography, “Iskinderiya…Lih (Alexandria…Why?)” and Yousry Nasrallah’s award-winning urban drama “El Madina” (The City).

(...) Misr International Films continues to pioneer the regional film industry through production and local development programs aimed to expand cultural dialogue and understanding.

The most recent of these projects is the Misr Film Focus Initiative. (...) the program aims to identify and cultivate six young Egyptian directors with the goal of aiding them in the production of their first or second feature film.
The project originated in April 2011, only a few short months after Egypt’s January 25 Revolution." (Maha ElNabawi/Special to Daily News Egypt)

Wendell Steavenson : "The Martyrs and the Masses"

Wendell Steavenson : "The Martyrs and the Masses" | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"It is increasingly clear that a revolution—a complete change of regime, institutional purge, and real reform—has not yet been achieved. Like most here, I find myself veering between optimism and pessimism, confused by the clutter in between. Egypt is three weeks away from the beginning of a three-month-long campaign season. Is this the first step on the road to representative government? Or is it just a complicated and fractured distraction from the real issue, namely the military’s de facto control of the country ?"

| Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

11.11.11 : Giza Pyramid is closed in front of everybody | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Dear Egyptians our media all those years managed to hide the fact that there is a Giza Pyramid cult outside Egypt bigger than you think. Dear Egyptians for year there are followers of cults that worships ancient Egyptian deities come to Egypt to visit the pyramids and other ancient monuments to worship. Some people in the world believe that on 11.11.11 star gates will be opened in several areas in the world including the pyramids and our alien ancestors will come. “We will see a lot of that in December 2012 insh Allah”
Dear Egyptians stop the paranoia and focus on things that really matter , instead of speaking day and night about that stupid party that is already being banned why nobody is raising a demand to open an investigation about our ancient treasures that have been stolen in the past 30 years !?" “This plan aims to make it easier for people to travel short distances in the nation’s cities and towns,” the Ministry explained, adding that it will start the project in Shebin el-Kom City, el-Menoufia Governorate." (Ashraf Sadek/The Egyptian Gazette)

Organizers say Mason Celebration on Despite SCA’s Denial

Organizers say Mason Celebration on Despite SCA’s Denial | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"Despite an announcement by the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) that a Mason celebration at the pyramids’ plateau will not take place, the company organizing the event started a countdown meter on its website confirming the Jewish-sponsored event will go on as scheduled.

The countdown prompted hundreds of archeologists to call for a demonstration at the Giza Plateau starting Thursday evening and continuing into Friday evening to block the celebration.

The company organizing the event cast doubts over the position of the SCA’s Secretary General Mustafa Amin by saying he has not yet taken a decision approving or banning the event.

Organizers of Thursday’s protests say they reject the celebration because an integral part of it was to place the Star of David in the chamber of the Pharaoh Khufu inside the great pyramid." (25TV)

Ancient Christian ruins in danger

Ancient Christian ruins in danger | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"The ruins of the 1,500-year-old St. Menas’ church and monastery near Alexandria, Egypt, are sinking into water-saturated soil and may be added to the UN’s list of World Heritage Sites in Danger.

The situation worsened two weeks ago with the collapse of an ancient crypt at the site.

Called “Abu Mena” ever since it was destroyed around 600 AD during the Islamic Conquest, the church was built around 300 AD in honor of Egyptian martyr St. Menas. A monastery was added and the area became a Christian pilgrimage center. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 1979." (Rob Kerby/beliefnet)

Non-governmental organizations Refuse to Meet with Governing Authorities | Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

"The undersigned human rights organizations refuse to participate in the meeting called today by Dr. Ali Salmi, Deputy Prime Minister for Political Development and Democratic Transition, in order to discuss criteria for selecting a Constituent Assembly to draft the constitution. We refuse to attend any other meetings of this kind until the government of Dr. Essam Sharaf and the military council prove their respect for the dignity and rights of the Egyptian people. Under this government and military council, thousands have been subjected to unjust military trials, and torture has increased whilst perpetrators go unpunished. Smear campaigns have targeted the very civil society organizations which helped uncover and address the crimes of the former dictator Hosni Mubarak – apparently in revenge for their concern for the dignity and rights of the Egyptian people. (...)

The undersigned human rights organizations say: 'We established our credibility with the Egyptian people through years of hard work resisting the dictatorship and addressing practices which violated human rights. Regardless of the military council and government's position towards us, we will not participate in discussions which, ten months after the fall of Mubarak, begin to look less and less serious. It is out of question to discuss a constituent assembly to draft the constitution with the government and military council. Their prisons are packed with hundreds, if not thousands, of citizens. Their people have paid the price for a society which respects the rights and dignity of humans with the blood of their children. And members of this government and council continue to evade punishment for their crimes, falsehoods, and incitement against the Egyptian people."
