Human trafficking in the Sinai

For years with the knowledge, and some suspect the consent, of the Egyptian government, human trafficking has been going on in the north-eastern part of the Sinai with Bedouins from the Rashaida tribe holding human refugees hostage, demanding unbelievable sums of money for their release.

The hostages, mainly from Eritrea but also from Ethiopia and Sudan, are often kidnapped in South Sinai after fleeing their violent countries; some kidnapped even from the UNHCR refugee camps in the region, then transported to the Sinai where they are held in underground locations or buildings housing up to 100 people. They are subjected to unspeakable torture as the kidnappers try to press ransom money from the hostages’ relatives. For this purpose the kidnappers hand cell phones to the hostages and force them to call their relatives at home or overseas, begging for enormous sums of money that can reach $50,000 per person.

Brotherhood Plans Now in Action To Control Egypt Education - Al-Monitor

Brotherhood Plans Now in Action To Control Egypt Education - Al-Monitor | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

The Muslim Brotherhood has long had ambitions to control the Egyptian education system, and since taking power, they have wasted little time in turning these ambitions into reality, writes Wahid Abdel Magid.

As a result of this interest, schools and universities became some of the most important sources for new recruits, if not the most important of all. The Brotherhood’s student section was, therefore, of special significance to the Brotherhood and was used to recruit most of its members, in parallel with the work done by the Muslim Sisters Group.

Ever since it ascended to power, the Brotherhood has put education at the forefront of its priorities, within the framework of its plan to take control of the state’s institutions, and its continued quest to spread its influence throughout society.(...)

It would seem that one of the methods to which the Brotherhood will resort in this regard will be its exploitation of the National Council for Education and Scientific Research — which Brotherhood members of the Constituent Assembly insisted on being mentioned in the constitution — as a tool to dominate the education sector in an authoritarian manner reminiscent of the Stalinist Soviet era.

Toward that end, Brotherhood members of the Shura Council, in cooperation with their counterparts at the Ministries of Education and Higher Education, have presented a comprehensive draft proposal to the Shura Council aimed at giving the Brotherhood dominion over the educational system.

Egypt’s underprivileged children given education opportunity in City of the Dead

Egypt’s underprivileged children given education opportunity in City of the Dead | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

The Association of Children with Special Needs is giving the underprivileged and disabled children of Cairo’s City of the Dead an opportunity to learn and socialize together, an opportunity they may not get elsewhere.

The City of the Dead is home to thousands of families who reside in the old cemetery’s narrow, unpaved alleyways. Most of the families survive on pensions, cheap labor, or daily fare to get by, earning no more than 1200 Egyptian pounds a year (200USD).

Even those who maintain steady incomes can rarely afford the cost of raising their children or enrolling them in schools.

The Association of Children with Special Needs, however, has given parents of both disabled and able-bodied children the opportunity of a basic education.

Their services, which are free of charge, aim to fight ignorance, poverty and illness through a range of basic activities and social and health projects.

In a small furnished apartment near the City of the Dead, classes begin every day at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT).

Children are taught simple mathematics, songs and basic Islamic teachings. The association brings together both disabled and able-bodied children in an effort to promote and encourage interaction and acceptance of each other.
