Abul-Fotouh condemns Morsi 'failures', demands early presidential elections

Abul-Fotouh condemns Morsi 'failures', demands early presidential elections | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

Abul-Fotouh, a former presidential candidate, was speaking at a press conference in the Nile Delta governorate of Gharbiya on Sunday.

“President Morsi thought he could rule the country through his group [the Muslim Brotherhood]. But this is not right, the president can’t rule successfully unless he is surrounded by the people,” he added.

Abul-Fotouh said the Muslim Brotherhood should withdraw from politics and focus on religious preaching.

“The people are paying the price for the mixing of religion and politics,” he said.

Abul-Fotouh was a member of the Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau from 1987 until 2009. He left the group after the January 25 Revolution when he defied the group's official policy by declaring he would stand in presidential elections.

Abul-Fotouh was an early frontrunner in the presidential race but eventually finished fourth.

He formed the Strong Egypt Party in October 2012.

Abul-Fotouh made similar comments about the need for early presidential elections when he was in Doha earlier this month.

ElBaradei and Abouel Fotouh discuss alliance in next elections

ElBaradei and Abouel Fotouh discuss alliance in next elections | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it
Talk of political alliances ahead of upcoming parliamentary elections increased yesterday after a meeting that included Strong Egypt Party head Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh, Constitution Party head Mohamed ElBaradei and Egypt Party head Amr Khaled.
Egypte actus's insight:

During the meeting, held at Abouel Fotouh's home, the three discussed potentially forming yet another electoral alliance to compete in the elections, and agreed to form a committee to manage the coalition during elections.

ElBaradei stressed during the meeting that any alliance must fall within the framework of the National Salvation Front, which has become the default umbrella group for opposition forces.

Other sources said that Khaled will coordinate with a number of parties within the front and other public figures to broker an agreement on how to contest the elections.

The parties also agreed to keep news of the coalition under wraps until the Constitution Party discusses it with its members who are involved with the front.

During the meeting, which lasted for two and a half hours, ElBaradei said that the new alliance would also welcome other parties.

Egypt ex-presidential candidate party to contest polls

Egypt ex-presidential candidate party to contest polls | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

Former presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abul Fotouh said Tuesday his party will contest Egypt's next parliamentary elections, boycotted by the main opposition coalition.

The Strong Egypt Party is to field candidates in the staggered legislative polls which start on April 22.

Abul Fotouh told reporters in Cairo he believed parties had to "stand up to authority" in order to avoid the monopolisation of power.

A former member of President Mohamed Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood, Abul Fotouh founded the Strong Egypt Party in July 2012 after his defeat in a presidential election a month earlier.

He came in fourth in a first round of polling, with 18 per cent of the vote.

Egypt's main opposition bloc, the National Salvation Front which groups mainly liberal and leftist movements, announced last week it was boycotting the legislative elections, doubting their transparency.

Abou el Fotouh denies alliance with Salvation Front

Abou el Fotouh denies alliance with Salvation Front | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

Former presidential candidate and Strong Egypt Party head Abdel Moneim Abouel Fotouh has denied any intention to merge with the National Salvation Front in the upcoming parliamentary elections, accusing the front of deepening political divides.

Abouel Fotouh told independent daily Al-Shorouk that his party had not, and will not, ask to join the front, stressing that they refuse to engage in politics through the group.

Abouel Fotouh added that his party does not mind coordinating with other revolutionary groups for the upcoming House of Representatives elections, but ruled out allying with the National Salvation Front, which, he claimed, contains both revolutionary and anti-revolutionary figures.

He had earlier called upon the front to purge its ranks of members affiliated with the regime of former President Hosni Mubarak.

“If some National Salvation Front parties, such as the Popular Socialist Alliance or the Dostour Party, are eager to coordinate with us as separate entities, we have no objection to that,” Abouel Fotouh said.
