Statues of 5th dynasty top officials discovered in Abusir

Statues of 5th dynasty top officials discovered in Abusir | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

During routine excavations in Abusir South, 30km north of Giza plateau, Czech excavators from the Czech Institute of Egyptology of the Charles University in Prague, unearthed a collection of fifth dynasty ancient Egyptian statues.

Miroslav Barta, the head of the Czech mission told Ahram Online that the statues were found in a hidden tunnel located inside a rock-hewn tomb of Iti, the crew inspector. His tomb is located between two rock-hewn tombs of two fifth dynasty high officials: the overseer of the crew scribe, Nefer, and the chief of justice of the Shepespuptah great house.

Although the exploration of the tunnel suggests that it was subjected to looting in antiquity, nine wooden and painted limestone statues were found inside.

"It seems that tomb raiders did not recognise the importance, nor the beauty of such statues, so they left them in situ but, regretfully, six were broken into two as a result of the robbers' activities, with three found intact," Barta told Ahram Online. Perhaps, he continued, they were searching for jewellery or the like.

These statues were found scattered in the tunnel, some standing in their original position, others laying on the floor. Two of the fragments were made of wood, while the rest of the statues were made of limestone and most of them still have polychromy. Only one statue is inscribed with the deceased's name, Iti.

Barta says the discovery is very important because it shows the traditions of ancient Egyptian burial practices, the society, environment, art and history of the fifth dynasty. Excavation is continuing for more evidence of that era in Egypt’s ancient history.

Abusir means The House of Osiris, the god of the dead and resurrection. Abusir became a royal burial place during the reign of King Userkaf, founder of the fifth dynasty, who built a remarkable and unique solar temple. Some of his successors built their own burial and solar temples there. The last solar temple was built by King Menkauhor at the end of the fifth dynasty.

A collection of mastaba tombs of higher courtiers are found there among them the one belongs to the royal hair dresser and vizier Ptahshepses. (Nevine El-Aref/Ahram Online)

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi will visit Russia next week, a state-run newspaper reported on Friday, in a visit market sources expect to focus on the cash-strapped Arab state's energy, wheat import and financing needs.

Morsi will meet President Vladimir Putin for talks that would explore "ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in all fields", Al Gomhuria reported, citing an anonymous source.

The Syria crisis would be high on his agenda, it said. The presidency could not immediately be reached for comment.

Major Russian gas producer exits Egypt

Major Russian gas producer exits Egypt | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

Political instability in Egypt scares away Russia's second-largest natural gas producer.

Russia's largest independent natural gas producer, Novatek, decided to exit the Egyptian market and end its production activities due to the country's political instability and the deteriorating security conditions, says Anatoliy Chomachka, a diplomatic representative at the Russian embassy in Cairo.

This is just another missed investment opportunity for Egypt; the country has witnessed the withdrawal of major investments since the January 2011 uprising," the Cairo-based diplomat told Aswat Masriya, a Reuters affiliate.

Egypt's Coptic Christian population has often had a difficult relationship with the country's Muslim majority, and human rights groups estimate that several thousand Copts may have left the country since the 2011 revolution.

For a significant number Russia offers hope of a secure future, but the new life awaiting them in an unfamiliar environment is often not without its own difficulties.

Une remise à niveau des relations russo-égyptiennes

Une remise à niveau des relations russo-égyptiennes | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

‘Suez Canal Axis’ development plan presented to Russian Investors at Arabia Expo

‘Suez Canal Axis’ development plan presented to Russian Investors at Arabia Expo | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

Egyptian investors are set to present the Suez Canal Regional Development Plan to Russian investors during both the Arabia Expo and during a number of meetings sponsored by the Egyptian-Russian Business Council, both scheduled to take place from 30 May to 1 June.

Hisham Al-Shanawi, member of the board of directors for the Egyptian Business and International Investment Organisation, said that he had recently obtained a copy of the Suez Canal Axis Development plan from the minister of housing and urban communities for the purpose of distributing it to Russian investors.

Meetings for the Organisation have not occurred during 2011 due to the ongoing political deadlock gripping Egypt.

Batsilev Patchenko, vice president of the Russian-Arab Business Council, and president of the Russian-Arab Commerce and Industry Chamber, said that renewed cooperation within the Arab-Russian business community was set to take place in 2013.

Operations within the smaller Egyptian-Russian Business Council had stalled in recent years; however, they are expected to pick up after a decision made to reconvene the committee was recently made by both the Egyptian and Russian ministers of industry.

Patchenko accused Egypt of not doing enough to secure Russian investment in recent years, in addition to failing to export its agriculture products. Russia imports large amounts of agricultural products from all over the world during the winter, particularly from the Middle Eastern countries of Israel, Lebanon and Morocco. Egypt, he said, has recently fallen low on its list of countries from which it imports, despite its large agricultural potential.

Anatoly Shumatchenko, business liaison with the Russian Embassy in Cairo, said that the amount of business exchange done between Egypt and Russia totalled $3.6bn per year. Russian exports to Egypt, 50% of which consisted of grains, totalled $3.3bn per year, while Egyptian exports to Russia totalled only $300m. (Daily news Egypt)

Russian tourists dare to tread in Egypt, where many Europeans now fear to go

Russian tourists dare to tread in Egypt, where many Europeans now fear to go | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it
Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt -- Many Western European tourists are too scared of Egypt - even with deep discounts - to take their holidays in this sleepy Red Sea enclave at the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula.
Egypte actus's insight:

The town, which is a one hour flight from Cairo, barely survives by drawing less picky Russian visitors. These sun-deprived, beach-loving tourists are usually blissfully unaware of the troubles convulsing much of Egypt. Nor are they much interested in finding out.

It is this hardy or foolhardy attitude that has kept Russians going to other countries such as Thailand and Indonesia when problems similar to those that have plagued Egypt have caused Western tourists to flee.

After being bottled up in the Soviet Union for so long, Russians still have wanderlust. However, aside for the many Russian millionaires, who are welcome in Spain, France and Britain because they spend like crazy, most ordinary Russians still have great difficulty getting visas for Western countries. So they go where they can.

“Except for the Russians, the tourists are all back home. Or they’ve gone somewhere else,” lamented Aladdin Abu Taleb, who sells perfume in Sharm el- Sheikh’s Old Souk. “The problem is that too many foreigners listen to the foreign media and are scared. But to tell you the truth, the Egyptian media have exaggerated the violence, too.”
