Statues of 5th dynasty top officials discovered in Abusir

Statues of 5th dynasty top officials discovered in Abusir | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

During routine excavations in Abusir South, 30km north of Giza plateau, Czech excavators from the Czech Institute of Egyptology of the Charles University in Prague, unearthed a collection of fifth dynasty ancient Egyptian statues.

Miroslav Barta, the head of the Czech mission told Ahram Online that the statues were found in a hidden tunnel located inside a rock-hewn tomb of Iti, the crew inspector. His tomb is located between two rock-hewn tombs of two fifth dynasty high officials: the overseer of the crew scribe, Nefer, and the chief of justice of the Shepespuptah great house.

Although the exploration of the tunnel suggests that it was subjected to looting in antiquity, nine wooden and painted limestone statues were found inside.

"It seems that tomb raiders did not recognise the importance, nor the beauty of such statues, so they left them in situ but, regretfully, six were broken into two as a result of the robbers' activities, with three found intact," Barta told Ahram Online. Perhaps, he continued, they were searching for jewellery or the like.

These statues were found scattered in the tunnel, some standing in their original position, others laying on the floor. Two of the fragments were made of wood, while the rest of the statues were made of limestone and most of them still have polychromy. Only one statue is inscribed with the deceased's name, Iti.

Barta says the discovery is very important because it shows the traditions of ancient Egyptian burial practices, the society, environment, art and history of the fifth dynasty. Excavation is continuing for more evidence of that era in Egypt’s ancient history.

Abusir means The House of Osiris, the god of the dead and resurrection. Abusir became a royal burial place during the reign of King Userkaf, founder of the fifth dynasty, who built a remarkable and unique solar temple. Some of his successors built their own burial and solar temples there. The last solar temple was built by King Menkauhor at the end of the fifth dynasty.

A collection of mastaba tombs of higher courtiers are found there among them the one belongs to the royal hair dresser and vizier Ptahshepses. (Nevine El-Aref/Ahram Online)

Political activists and Luxor tourism workers have announced they will close touristic sites in 'the world's largest open air museum' if the newly-appointed governor is not dismissed from office.

A number of political groups, syndicates, and tourism workers in Luxor released a statement on Tuesday opposing the appointment of Adel El-Khayat as governor because he is a leading member of the ultra-conservative Al-Gamma Al-Islamiya group.

The group was responsible for the infamous 1997 Luxor attack in which at least 58 foreign tourists and four Egyptians were killed.

The statement asserted that the 52-year-old El-Khayat is incapable of leading the governorate because of his "[fundamentalist] religious background," adding that they will prevent him from entering his office and assuming his post.

CAIRO (Reuters, via The Courant) -

Sixteen years ago, Adel Mohamed al-Khayat was a member of the militant group blamed for slaughtering 58 tourists in Egypt's Valley of the Queens; today he's promising to keep visitors safe.

Khayat's appointment by President Mohamed Mursi as governor of the city of Luxor has triggered howls of protest, with demonstrators protesting for a second day on Tuesday and one critic calling it 'the last nail in the coffin of tourism'.

But in a telephone interview with Reuters, the 60-year-old governor declared: "Luxor is open to all tourists from all over the world. They are my main concern and are looked after by the state, which is responsible for their security and their wellbeing."

Al-Masry Al-Youm

A new campaign backing President Mohamed Morsy launched its website on Friday, claiming its motion supporting Egypt's embattled leader had already received 10 million signatures by Saturday.

The Tagarrod campaign, which in Arabic means "impartiality," was launched on 13 May during a Jama'a al-Islamiya party summit in Qena, around 600 kilometres south of Cairo.

The campaign’s general coordinator Ahmed Hosny said a press conference would be held on Monday to reveal the "surprising" numbers of supporters who have signed the petition.

“The [press] conference will ]include announcing [the names of] parties, who will coordinate with the campaign to stage rallies supporting the president” on 30 June, he added.

“Several press conferences will be held after that," Hosny continued. "There will be a joint conference with Islamist parties to announce details and stances that will be agreed on, including decisions on staging sit-ins outside the [Ettehadiya] presidential palace."

"There will also be another conference to declare the final number of signatures that the campaign collected,” Hosny told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Sunday.

The number officially cited so far is 10 million.

“The opposition practices the same policy of exclusion exercised by former regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak," Hosny claimed. "There is a struggle for power and another ideological one."

"Some people oppose the president because they are against Islam. Other opponents are patriotic and respectful. Other parts of the opposition have no vision."

Khaled al-Meshad, the campaign’s spokesperson, added: "The recent number declared by the campaign is 10 million signatures. The press conference will declare a higher number that will shock the opposition.”

nterior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim called on Islamists not to stage any protests on 30 June, as clashes between supporters and opponents of President Mohamed Morsy would be tantamount to a “furnace of war.” Ibrahim also called on secular forces not to protest on 21 June, a day on which Islamists have planned protests.

The opposition is mobilizing for mass protests on 30 June to mark the one-year anniversary of Morsy’s inauguration and to demand for early presidential elections. Islamists, on the other hand, are planning counter protests on 21 June in support of the president.

“Officers are ready to sacrifice their lives for the homeland,” Ibrahim added Monday evening on the “Hona al-Asema” talk show on the CBC channel.

The Salafi Da’wa announced it would not partake in either of these protests, “to avoid political provocation, counter mobilization, and fiery speeches, which will lead to the division of society into two camps, one made up of Islamists who want Sharia and the other made up of secularists.”

“The majority of the opposition do not reject an [Islamic basis for governance], but object to the performance of the Cabinet and the president, who are not meeting the needs of the people,” the Salafi Da’wa added in a statement on Monday.

The statement rejected characterizations of Morsy’s opponents as “disloyal and treasonous,” and warned of segments of society who might exploit the demonstrations to spread violence and sabotage, and to shed blood.

Inside the culture ministry, located in Cairo's Zamalek district, artists and intellectuals have for the last two weeks been staging an ongoing sit-in in protest at the new culture minister's policies.

Artists and intellectuals stormed the ministry on 5 June and occupied the office of culture minister Alaa Abdel-Aziz, angered by his sacking of key culture officials and what they describe as attempts to "Brotherhoodise" Egypt's culture scene.

For two weeks now, the protesters inside the building have been occupying two large rooms on the ground floor of the two-storey building, which normally serve as a waiting room and a meeting room. As the protesters spend their days and night in the ministry, on the second floor, the employees continue their daily routine.

"We come to the office every day; check-in and out. There is not much change inside the building except that the two rooms on the ground floor are occupied by the protesting artists," Marwa, one of the employees at the ministry, tells Ahram Online.

Newly-appointed Luxor Governor Adel Asaad said he would boost tourism in the governorate, stressing that his allegiance is to the Egyptian people, not to Jama'a al-Islamiya.

A decision by President Mohamed Morsy to appoint 7 Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated governors sparked controversy Monday, focusing on the appointment of Asaad, a Jama'a al-Islamiya official who has been implicated in the 1997 terror attack in Luxor, which killed 62 people, many of them foreign tourists.

Asaad said in a phone-in with Al-Tahrir channel on Monday evening: "I am  here to boost tourism, fight unemployment and provide job opportunities. The tourist cannot be afraid under my governance."

President Mohamed Morsy appointed new governors for 17 provinces, Sunday, to which the opposition vehemently objected.

Asaad belongs to Jama’a al-Islamiya, a hardline Islamist group blamed for killing 59 tourists in al-Deir al-Bahari, Luxor, in 1997.

Radical fatwas were issued after the 25 January revolution, prohibiting relics and calling for imposing restrictions on tourists in line with Islamic Sharia.

Asaad denied that Jama'a al-Islamiya had been involved in the 1997 violence.

Saudi Arabia has reduced the number Egyptians permitted to perform hajj this year by 20%, a move expected to hurt Egyptian tourism companies.

The Saudi government cited ongoing infrastructural projects in the holy city of Mecca as the primary cause for the cut.

Elhamy El-Zayat, the chairman of the Egyptian Tourism Federation, said tourism companies will face “definite losses” due to the decision.

“Figures from the Ministry of Tourism and federation tried to communicate with the authorities in Saudi Arabia but their decision is final and will be applied to all [countries],” El-Zayat said.

Unidentified protestors broke into the Fayoum governorate offices on Monday night following an anti-Muslim Brotherhood presentation,  according to a political activist in Fayoum.

According to activist Hoda Abbas, members of the opposition in Fayoum had organized a presentation, titled Ikhwan Kazebon (The Muslim Brotherhood Are Liars), in response to Brotherhood claims that their Sunday demonstrations were of a peaceful nature. Following the presentation, the opposition held a march towards the governorate building condemning the appointment of the new governor, Gaber Abdel Salam, a Muslim Brotherhood member.

A number of unidentified demonstrators then broke through the building’s gate and vandalised the building, Abbas said.

Égypte : Morsi installe des alliés

Égypte : Morsi installe des alliés | Égypte-actualités | Scoop.it

Members of Egypt’s Christian minority are free to express their opinions on the streets, just as they were to vote for whomever candidate they supported in the past presidential elections, said head of the Coptic Orthodox Church Pope Tawadros II.

In a Monday interview on MBC Egypt satellite channel, the patriarch said the decision for Copts to protest, both on 30 June and in general, was an issue of personal freedom of expression. “Anyone is allowed to express their opinions peacefully,” said the pope. He went on to say the Church was above politics and focused on its social and religious role.

The pontiff also dismissed allegations by some Islamist movements accusing the Church of mobilising Christians, saying the Church was being used as a scapegoat to falsely explain ongoing domestic problems. When asked about comments made by Al-Jamaa Al-Islamiya leading member Assem Abdel Maged, who has launched a petition campaign supporting President Mohamed Morsi, the pope responded saying, “There are some voices not worth listening to.”

"One guy jumped on the taxi trying to sell us a camel ride!" recounts Adam Koppeser, a Cairo resident who recently took some of his friends on a visit to the great Giza pyramids.
"And at the entrance, a guy asked me for my ticket but he wasn't wearing a tourism badge. When I asked him to show it to me, I pointed out that what he showed me was his national ID – not a tour guide permit."

To counter this kind of harassment and build bridges with the villagers of Nazlet Al-Samaan neighbouring the Giza plateau pyramids, the ministry of state for antiquities established The Plateau Committee.

The committee consists of representatives from the Ministry of State for Antiquities (MSA), ministries of tourism and interior as well as representatives from Giza governorate, civil society and Nazlet Al-Samaan residents. It will submit a monthly report on the problems in the plateau and suggest solutions.

Murad Ali then called on the opposition to provide reasons for their rejection of the new governors.

"ElBaradei and Sabbahi met with Rebel movement leaders and discussed what they’d do after June 30. As stated by the spokesman for the Rebel campaign, they agreed that there will be a constitutional declaration to allow the President of the Constitutional Court to assume power in Egypt and that a transitional government of 15 ministers would then be formed.

"There is information about an arrangement among certain former MPs and Mubarak’s National Party thugs to cause violence and mayhem in June 30 demonstrations."

The Strong Egypt Party supports a policy of "peaceful change" through its participation in anti-government protests on 30 June, and stands against calls for a "military coup" as an alternative to President Mohamed Morsi's rule.

"We are afraid that Egypt's army will slip into political dilemmas, or that a civil war could break out between those competing for power," the party said in an official statement released on Monday detailing its reasons for participation in the mass protests planned for 30 June to oppose Morsi and call for early presidential elections.

Strong Egypt, led by former Islamist presidential contender Abdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh, said that the current political strife in the country is the direct responsibility of Morsi and the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), who "diverted long ago from the aims of the 25 January revolution."

"Instead, they focus on fulfilling their own goals, which do not coincide with the revolution's aims," the statement read.

It attributed the country's current "political strife" to increasing "exclusion and accusations of treason and heresy."
