Former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq plans to return to Egypt "soon" now that criminal charges against him have been dropped, the Mubarak-era minister told Turkish news agency Anadolu on Monday. In a telephone interview, Shafiq said he planned to attend to some unfinished business abroad before returning to Egypt. After narrowly losing Egypt's first post-Mubarak presidential poll last summer to Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi, Shafiq departed Egypt for the United Arab Emirates, where he remains until now. Upon his return to Egypt, Shafiq said, he would focus on leading his National Movement Party, adding that he would consider a possible alliance with the National Salvation Front (NSF) opposition umbrella group.

The El-Haraka El-Watanya El-Masrya Party delivered 19,000 signatures delegating the army to run the country, to the Morale Affairs Administration of the Armed Forces on Saturday. The signatures were collected from party members and citizens from 20 governorates. The party released a statement on Saturday saying that those who submitted their signatures were upset with President Mohamed Morsi’s regime. They criticised the regime’s inability to respond to the people’s needs of security and stability which is evident in the increasing calls for civil disobedience across the country. “The Armed Forces are the most capable of running the country in this transitional stage; they enjoy popular consensus,” said Hesham Hashem, deputy founding member of the party. He added that the army should run the country until security is restored and the economy begins recovering. “The army has the responsibility to save the country from the Muslim Brotherhood’s occupation; it’s the worst kind of occupation Egypt has seen,” Hashem said. The party’s statement said the army carries the historical responsibility of protecting the people as they represent all factions of Egyptian society. The campaign to collect signatures started in Port Said, spreading to other governorates. The military spokesperson has denied the Armed Forces were involved or asked for these signatures. Egypt's justice ministry on Tuesday referred former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq to the Cairo criminal court on charges of corruption and squandering public funds, judicial sources told AFP.
Shafiq who has been living in the United Arab Emirates since his defeat in the election, faces arrest on his return to Egypt after he was put on an airport watch list.
He is being investigated along with his daughters and 10 other defendants over illegally seizing public land for use by the Pilot Association, which Shafiq headed.
Shafiq, the last prime minister to serve under ousted president Hosni Mubarak, is already facing trial in a separate fraud cases.
The former airforce commander narrowly lost a June presidential election to Islamist Mohamed Morsi.
The trial will be the latest in a series of court actions that have jailed much of the former regime's leadership, including Mubarak himself.

Egypt's former presidential Candidate Ahmed Shafiq told Al Arabiya TV in an interview on Sunday that the infamous dragging and beating of a naked old man near the presidential palace last week was previously planned by the interior ministry to terrorize the people.

Mubarak-era Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq said he would return to Egypt within a few weeks, and is considering an alliance with the opposition coalition the National Salvation Front, as well as another bid for the presidency. Shafiq told the Turkish news agency Anadolu on Monday that he was confident he would be found innocent on charges of financial corruption, and would leave the United Arab Emirates to return to Cairo as soon as he resolved some “private” affairs. Once he returns to Cairo, he would take over leadership of the political party founded by his supporters, and would also enter the running for the next presidential elections. “I will serve the country at any position. I don’t look for any post. I don’t seek to rule the country like the Muslim Brotherhood. However, if circumstances allowed me, I will stand for elections,” Shafiq said. Shafiq said he would anticipate “huge investments to come to Egypt, if the Muslim Brotherhood left [power].” He added that he had communicated with several investors “who promised to invest in Egypt,” and had also been working on an economic program that would get the nation out of its current crisis.

Dowidar added that this step follows the order of Osama El-Saidi, the prosecutor in charge of an embezzlement case against Shafiq known as the 'pilots' housing' case to refer Shafiq, his three daughters and another ten accomplices for trial for embezzling public funds.
Ahmed Shafiq and his daughters are accused of seizing land that belonged to fish farms and illegally allocating it to the Pilots' Association for Land Development, which he headed.
In June 2012, following his defeat in the presidential elections by Mohamed Morsi, Shafiq and his family left Egypt for Abu Dhabi.

Former parliamentarian and vice-chairman of Al-Wasat party Essam Sultan was sentenced in absentia to one month in prison for insulting former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq. Shafiq, who fled to the United Arab Emirates after losing the presidential elections in June 2012, had filed a lawsuit against Sultan. Sultan was fined EGP 10,000 and handed an EGP 50 bail by Al-Matareya Misdemeanour Court, state-owned Al-Ahram reported. In a statement released on his Facebook page, Sultan said that the court failed to notify him of the date of the trial. “This verdict is legally incorrect,” Sultan said in his statement. He added that the Egyptian Penal Code punishes insults and libel with an EGP 10,000 fine; the law makes no reference to imprisonment as a possible punishment. Shafiq’s lawyer, Hesham Murad, said Sultan had repeatedly offended Shafiq on his Facebook page, quoting “if you are man enough, come back to Egypt”, and “when you were Prime Minister, millions of dollars were smuggled abroad to Ahmed Ezz, Gamal and Alaa Mubarak, and Suzan Thabet.” Sultan denied the existence of any evidence incriminating him.
