Priceless Egyptian treasures feared destroyed in South London museum fire

Priceless Egyptian treasures feared destroyed in South London museum fire | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Priceless ancient Egyptian artefacts are feared lost forever after a fire gutted the museum building they were housed in.

A coin from Queen Cleopatra’s reign during 51 to 30BC as well as mummies, fragments of tombs from Thebes and stones inscripted with hieroglyphics may have been destroyed in the blaze which raged for nearly five hours at the Cuming Museum in Southwark yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters say they have managed to save more than 500 objects that were on display in the museum, which was founded by the Cuming family in 1906 and is famed for its 100,000-strong collection of pieces from around the world over the course of more than a century.

Rescuers put out fire at downtown Cairo mall

Rescuers put out fire at downtown Cairo mall | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out Sunday at Talaat Harb Shopping Center in downtown Cairo.

Al-Ahram news portal said 12 shops burned down, causing huge financial losses. No injuries were reported.

Eight fire engines helped put out the fire, which started on the third floor before spreading to the fourth and fifth floors.

Clothing sold by shops in the building caused the fire to spread quickly, and the malls workers were unable to put it out, Al-Ahram said.

The website cited Ahmed Wahba, spokesperson the Civil Defense Forces in Cairo, as saying an electrical short circuit likely caused the fire.

Pas d'incendie à Karnak!

Pas d'incendie à Karnak! | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

A fire swept through Al-Howeiyaty Secondary School for Girls, leaving its contents destroyed, during clashes between protesters and security personnel on the streets surrounding the Interior Ministry.
Egypt-actus's insight:

The clashes also caused a fire at Lycee al-Horreya School, leaving dozens injured on the two sides.

The historic Al-Howeiyaty school building was owned by the Turkish noble Al-Howeiyaty Pasha. It was turned into a school in 1944. The school’s area is estimated at 1,960 square meters.

Lycee al-Horreya school is one of the oldest schools in downtown Cairo, built in 1932 during the British occupation in Egypt. It was used for the children of foreigners based in Egypt, and designed by the famous Egyptian architect Weesa Wasef.

A Series of Unfortunate events : Fire in Giza Zoo

A Series of Unfortunate events : Fire in Giza Zoo | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it
Egypt-actus's insight:

This is this second part of the "A series of Unfortunate events" in Egypt. We are starting the week with another disaster.
There is a fire now in Giza zoo that is destroying its old , real old trees. Some reports say that the fire started in the old trees and moved to the animals' food warehouse. Some are saying the fire started besides the reptiles
Not less than 8 fire engines are trying to put off the fire that is spreading in old trees. We are speaking about extremely old trees.
I am so sad and angry.
Journalists are not let in the zoo and they can not get accurate information about the size of the damages there.
I know that the government and the current regime which like the old one disrespects our old heritage will not rest except when the Giza zoo is completely destroyed and its land is being sold to businessmen.

Institut d'Egypte annex set on fire in clashes

An annex of the Institut d’Egypte was set on fire Thursday evening during ongoing clashes between protesters and police forces on Qasr al-Aini Street in downtown Cairo. The clashes started up again after the Armed Forces began rebuilding the wall near the entrance to Tahrir Square that demonstrators tore down earlier in the day.

Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that the fire started when a protester threw a Molotov cocktail at security forces. It fell on a tree near the building, setting it ablaze. Satellite channel Al Jazeera later reported that emergency responders brought the flames under control.

Sources at Qasr al-Aini and Mounira Hospitals told Al-Masry Al-Youm that nine have been injured in the clashes so far, including eight police officers.

The Institut d’Egypte burned down on 17 December 2011 during clashes between military forces and protesters in front of the nearby Cabinet building, in which at least 17 people were killed and hundreds injured. It was reopened in October following restoration.

The latest spate of clashes comes after army vehicles arrived on the scene late in the afternoon with concrete blocks and a crane to rebuild the concrete wall ripped apart by protesters that morning.

Al-Masry Al-Youm reported that the Interior Ministry asked the army to help rebuild the wall. Army officers were seen talking to police officers at the scene.
