(Euronews)

Anger during double funeral for slain activists

A double funeral was held on Monday at Omar Makram mosque in Tahrir Square for slain activists Mohamed El-Gendy and Amr Saad.

Mohamed El-Gendy died after allegedly being tortured in police custody following his arrest in clashes near Tahrir on December 27th.

Amr Saad died from his injuries after being hit by birdshot pellets in clashes between protesters and police outside the presidential palace on Friday.

Both activists belong to the Popular Current.

Friends and family of the deceased were present at the funeral, many crying before the coffins had arrived.

After the funeral in the mosque, dozens marched to Tahrir Square chanting against President Mohamed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood, who they say are responsible for the deaths.

Thousands attend funerals in Egypt port city

Thousands attend funerals in Egypt port city | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it
Egypt-actus's insight:

(Reuters, via Aswat Masriya) - Thousands of people turned out on the streets of Port Said on Monday to attend the funerals of the latest victims of violence in the Egyptian city where President Mohamed Mursi has declared a state of emergency, state television images showed.

The mourners bore coffins above their heads and some waved teargas canisters at the camera. Seven people were killed on Sunday at funerals for the 33 who had died in riots a day earlier.

Gunshots were heard and teargas was fired during Sunday's processions where rage turned against the government, but there were no immediate reports of a repeat of those incidents on Monday.

Angered by Gendy's death, protesters attack state buildings in Tanta

Angered by Gendy's death, protesters attack state buildings in Tanta | Égypt-actus | Scoop.it

Protesters attacked Gharbiya Security Directorate headquarters and the Tanta Police Station after clashes erupted with security forces following the funeral of activistMohamed al-Gendy on Monday.

Demonstrators hurled stones and Molotov cocktails at the police, who responded with a barrage of teargas to push the protesters back from the buildings. As of Monday night clashes were still ongoing.

Parallel to the clashes, an unidentified group of assailants broke into a gasoline station near the directorate headquarters and robbed the cash register.

Gendy, a member of the Popular Current who resided in Tanta, was in Cairo to take part in mass demonstrations commemorating the second anniversary of the revolution when he disappeared from Tahrir Square on 28 January. Four days later, Popular Current members located him in Al-Helal Hospital in Ramses in critical condition. Party members and Gendy's family accuse the police of arresting and torturing him to death.

The activist's funeral took place on Monday in Tahrir's Omar Makram Mosque. Gendy was then buried in Tanta.

The funerals of Mohamed El-Gendy and Amr Abdel Reheem Sa’ad took place at Omar Makram mosque in Tahrir Square on Monday. El-Gendy was kidnapped with claims of torture and died four days after he was found. Sa’ad was shot near the presidential palace during the latest clashes.

Nearly one thousand attended the funeral of the two men who died on Sunday. Mourners were inconsolable as the bodies arrived at the mosque.

In attendance were political figures such as former presidential candidates Hamdeen Sabahy and Khaled Ali.

Following the funeral the bodies were driven slowly around Tahrir Square and were followed by mourners who chanted against President Mohamed Morsi and called for the fall of the regime.

The funeral march then went to the Corniche El-Nile. The cars containing the bodies sped off after the mourners aimed their frustration at police stationed near the American embassy.
