CAIRO: The Popular Current movement criticized the statement issued by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces on Monday, in which it authorized Minister of Defense Abdel Fatah al-Sisi to run for the presidency.

The movement added, in a statement to Youm7, that the SCAF supporting a single candidate will undermine the competition during the coming presidential elections. The SCAF’s statement expressed support for Sisi as president, in what they called a response to the will of the people.

The movement meanwhile expressed concern over the absence of serious competition between the candidates, adding that this would violate the right of the people to choose their president.

The SCAF has the right discuss the future of its leaders without involving them in the political affairs, the movement’s statement read, adding that the council does not have the constitutional right to assess the popular support of any of the candidates.

The Popular Current expressed their appreciation of the role performed by the armed forces to protect the borders and maintain national security. The movement also called on Sisi to refrain from running in presidential elections and to keep his position as Minister of Defense.
